A triumphant inaugural story! As others have said, it was a great balance of plot and the relationship moving gently onto a new level, with very convincing dialogue and it nicely rooted in the proper timeframe.
One of my favourite lines in this half was: Having a CI5 ID worked wonders although the shop was probably still wondering why the tree had to be impounded. The mind boggles at the possible explnations!
One very small point - I think your chief baddie would be referred to as Sir Henry (as Cowley does at one point), not Sir Langton - although if anyone is more expert than me on aristocratic nomenclature and can give a definitive judgement, that would be good.
