Any application for planning approval, for instance to convert old farm buildings, is subject to a bat survey, and if the insepctor finds any trace of bats, it's curtains to the development until they are satisfied that no bats will be disturbed and there are suitable substitute bat-roosting facilities in the plans.

Still I quite like to see bats on summer evening, so it's good they're protected.
