Discovered in the Christmas Tree, Day 3 in January
Alas, LJ's recent changes have made posting or commenting an exercise in frustration, so I'm not able to insert a nifty picture of my challenge prompt.
Purple acorns, however, serve as an excellent visual metaphor for my one completed project for the Discovered in the Christmas Tree challenge - Pros story lists.
Squirrels gather acorns of course, and the project did - at times - make me squirrely. *g* Like a squirrel hunting buried acorns, I stumbled upon forgotten treasures. And lastly, purple is a color often associated with LGB communities, and so appropriate for a (primarily) slash story list.
Coincidentally, for years I've had a drawing on my desk of a squirrel atop a huge pile of acorns smiling maniacally, upon which my mother had written: "Mine, all mine!" She'd sent it as a comment on my passion for reading and collecting books.
By nature and nurture I'm an inveterate information collector and list maker. It's something I do in all aspects of my life, not just fandom - though fandom has provide me with incredible opportunities to indulge myself.
For me, one of the great joys of Pros fandom is that it has included some truly incredible - and I don't use the word lightly - women who have a shared passion for information collection and organization. My gratitude is both personal (being in like-minded company is a joy *BG*) and practical (these women have provided the foundation for numerous fannish institutions upon which we fellow fen rely).
Far too many Pros fen take these organizational efforts for granted, but believe me, thirty-plus years of Pros fannish output would be impossible to navigate without the work of these women. Mind you, it's still not easy in every case *g*, but without their efforts it would be truly impossible.
There are far too many fen who don't maintain a Master List of their fan works (be it fiction, non-fiction, vids, fan art, or other forms). I would strongly encourage each of us to do so. Not only because it makes it easier for fellow fen to find your work, but because as time passes, it is all too easy for us to lose track of our own fan works.
However, while we're waiting on those Fan Works Master Lists, I'd like to encourage other Pros fen to compile story lists for Pros authors and share them. It's fun, it's useful, and for most authors, it is much, much simpler than the example here! *g* Oh, and that applies to other forms of fan works as well!
I originally compiled these Pros story lists in September 2007; they have been updated in December 2011.
Serious offline issues kept me from revisiting the lists to correct some known omissions. This year's DiaLJ Christmas challenge gave me the impetus to revise the lists, so thanks are due to
byslantedlight for organizing another wonderful winter season challenge. (And I apologize for taking your name in vain as the deadline approached, and LJ and my computer conspired to drive me insane! *g*)
I hope that I've now filled in any gaps, but if anyone finds an omission or error, PLEASE let me know! I WANT the lists to be accurate and complete and welcome any additions or corrections.
More detail on why I compiled the lists and the challenges it presented can be found at the bottom of the page.
FAN ART NOTE: Jane is also an accomplished fan artist in many mediums under several different names. Cataloging fan art presents it own unique challenges, in addition to those seen in story list compilations. I did not attempt to list her fan art. That's a project for another time!

NOTE: There is ongoing debate about whether or not Jane of Australia and Kathy Keegan are two pseudonyms for one and the same person or whether they are two separate people who shared similar styles, especially after years of frequent collaboration in writing and in zine publishing. Jane has strongly implied multiple times (in print interviews and in zine editorials) that she and Kathy are separate people. The Nut Hatch zines routinely referred to them as two separate people. Definitive statements on this issue are harder to find, and the potential wiggle room in some answers has fueled rumors and speculation. While there are certainly people who would know for sure, having known Jane and/or Kathy Keegan in person, I've not seen anyone absolutely confirm or deny the rumors. Personally, I consider it an open question at this point.

Story & Zine List Compilations Background
Back in 2007, a Pros fan asked for help in trying to track down Jane's complete oeuvre. She didn't have any idea where to look or, more importantly, what to look for. As I've been helping connect Pros fen and stories/zines for years, I couldn't resist her request and said I'd help, even knowing that it wouldn't be a simple task.
Why was this story list unusually challenging? In a nutshell: the sheer volume of stories, how many years Jane wrote in Pros, how many different places they were first published, how many places they were (or were not) later archived, and the number of series involved.
Jane was an extremely prolific author in Pros. She wrote Circuit stories from the mid 1980's on. She published her stories in numerous Pros anthologies, multi-media zines, letterzines, and as zine novels. Some were published through her own press (The Nut Hatch, with various name permutations over the years), while others were published by a wide variety of presses. One zine novel was paper published and provided with its own multi-media website. Some stories were archived on her own website (DOAW), now offline, some stories were archived through Proslib or at the Circuit Archive, while others have (so far) remained available only on the paper Circuit.
Additionally, many of Jane's stories are part of series, often scattered across multiple zines and letterzines and the Circuit. Some series were later collected in a single zine, or several zines might be collected into an omnibus edition.
*edited to fix typos*
This year's DiaLJ Christmas challenge gave me the impetus to revise the lists, so thanks are due to
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)

And I love the relevance of the purple acorns.

You've reminded me that I have work to do over at palelyloitering, of course, but that makes me happy too, and if it wasn't for you then that might not be there either - here's to all those women working away hard in the quiet background too... *g* And you're right about master lists (which people seem to be mentioning alot recently!) I finally gave in and made my own last year, mostly because, as you say, it's a good way to keep track of my own stories!
Sorry you're having problems with lj's changes though - it must be very selective who it messes up, because my lj is working so much more quickly and efficiently now (of course I also like the new comment format, although I'd be happy with the subject lines back). Posting pics in particular is faster and simpler. Shall cross my fingers that it improves for you - I'd love to see more posts from you, because I can imagine what they'd be like... *g*
Again - thank you!

You're welcome. Yes, it took some time, but I find list making meditative - and at the end, you have something useful. Though I don't think I've ever found a greater time sink than Pros and information projects....
Oooh, another list-maker and note-taker in Pros! {{{delighted hugs}}} There are a number of us currently more-or-less-active-as-circumstances-allow. I think we need a T-shirt. *BG*
When I first saw the prompt, it flumoxxed me. But then associations started to pop up and it just seemed more and more appropriate as time went on. *G*

You're welcome. I hope it proves useful for folks.

You're welcome. I'm relieved that you survived the cursing. I was afraid your ears would be burning well into the New Year. *g* And your skill at assigning prompts remains unparallelled; it really was inspirational.
Jane as artist - where to begin. Well, very briefly, I know that she was producing fan art at least as early as she was writing fan fiction in the early to mid 1980's, if not before. She is as prolific an artist as a writer, and like her writing career, she's used a number of pseudonyms for her artwork. Those pseudonyms include: Jane, JJ Adamson, JJ, Jade. Most of her early non-Pros art was under JJ Adamson or JJ. Her Pros art was mostly JJ for pencil, ink, charcoal, and paints. Once she started producing digital fan art, she began using Jade.
Producing so much fiction and publishing so much of it herself gave Jane an excellent opportunity to practice and refine her skilss, and it's interesting to see how she progressed over time. She did some really lovely digital work too; that's another reason I'm bitter that her website disappeared.
It's also interesting to see how being both writer and artist influenced the final product. Her strong visual sense really had a dramatic impact upon her writing. And of course, her writing allowed her to explore a variety of artistic styles and mediums.
Re updates at Palely Loitering, I've a huge amount of info/additons/corrections to send you as a result of one of the information projects that I didn't get finished to a point where I could post it here. I'm still working on it - it will always be a WIP - but I want to send off some info now before things get away from me. Unfortunately, I've got doctor appointments the rest of the week - fingers crossed I don't end up in hospital again - so I won't have time to clean it up and mail until next week. But I will send it, honest!! If you don't have it by next weekend, poke me with a poionted stick. *g*
Yay for your own master list! If I didn't say so at the time, THANK YOU!!
Don't even mention LJ changes - the mere thought of them sends my blood pressure sky rocketing, and I'm not sure my meds can keep my head from exploding. *g* Seriously though, I loathe and despise them with a passion I've seldom felt.
I'm glad that posting pics is easier for you - I enjoy your photos enormously, you've got a great eye and a sensibility that I find very appealling - and I'm glad that LJ is faster for you. For me it is the exact opposite.
They really have - without exaggeration - destroyed my ability to function on LJ. It's not just esthetics. They've killed functionality. It freezes my browser every time I try to comment or post or try to expand a comment. Having no subject line or ways to point easilty to a specific comment thread makes using communites more difficult if not impossible. The new format gives me headaches, and is harder to read - no small problem for someone like me with severe vision limitations already.
I'm sure that part of the problem is that my journal style is S1 but I don't want to switch to S2 to try and find a solution only to fail and then find out I can't switch back if needed. And I don't have the skills or time to try and fix things on my own. /whine

I'm another list maker... but so far I haven't made any lists that would useful to the pros fandom at large. However, I do know the amount of work that goes into the task and I appreciate it!
Sorry you're having ongoing lj problems. I read your response to byslantedlight's comment and can see why you're wary of changing to S2 - but it would solve the problem of the comments pages (because you could view in your own style) and I'm pretty sure you could switch back. It wouldn't do anything for the lack of subject lines etc. so general accessibility would remain a problem.
I hope you stay with us - and that your health issues are sorted soon.

Sadly, there's no current rush for the info to update palelyloitering - having just had to buy a new laptop after my lovely old one Fell Asleep, I've lost my old DreamWeaver programme too, and as I can't afford to buy a copy I'm going to have to look around for alternatives and get them up and running (and work out how to use them!)
Hmmn - is there a particular reason you prefer S1 to S2, for lj? I think you should be able to switch to S2 and then back if you prefer, because having checked my Journal Style page, there's an option at the bottom left hand corner to "Switch to old style system (S1)". I've never used S1, but I'm very happy with S2, and as Moth says below you can disable the changes and even get subject lines back for your own lj (and of course anyone else who's still using them), though I realise it's probably more an issue that other ljs you visit can't use them any more. I feel quite lucky that none of the comms etc I frequent depended on subject lines to make them easy to navigate... I wish I could pop over and help you get it sorted, I really do, I always like seeing you pop up on lj!

Well done managing to collate it from so many different sources, that must have been quite a labour of love! *g*
And thank you!

Oh, and yesterday I discovered that you were absolutely right - it *is* possible to tell my friends list page to show the last 20 instead of the last 10. Whether that is a new thing in the wake of the changes, I don't know, but hah, I has now dunnit. And now things are not falling off the bottom quite so fast.
Also, apparently we freebie account freeloaders can track 200 threads, which means there is no reason at all not to track interesting threads for ever and ever.

You've got a new lj, so you'll be on S2, because that was the automatic choice even back when I joined (though people can choose S1 if they want and know what to do with it!). Because S2 is the newer style, I think it's the one that's supported mostly by lj now, which I'm guessing is why the changes may have affected S1 users more horridly... I dunno, I've never had a problem with S2, I have a customised layout on it, and the changes seem to have made my lj no end speedier, so... I'm just sorry that some people are having so much trouble with them!
And yeay for both longer flists, and for tracking threads - I do like that function... *g*

With regard to the question of whether Jane and KK are one and the same or not, I have to say that I'm firmly of the opinion that their stories do all emanate from the same source. I'm undecided however whether this is because they are the work of one person, or whether the stories might be collaborations.
The novels of the professionally published author Mel Keegan add an interesting twist to the Jane/KK debate. For those who are unfamiliar with this author, Mel Keegan's books were at one time published by the now sadly defunct Gay Men's Press but are now published by Dreamcraft (a name that will be familiar from the days of the Nuthatch Collective). Many of Mel Keegan's published novels are reworkings of either Jane's or Kathy Keegan's old Pros stories; some have been renamed but many bear the original titles. For example -
Aquamarine (Jane)
Dangerous Moonlight (originally Perfect Gentlemen by Jane)
An East Wind Blowing (Jane)
Ice, Wind and Fire (Kathy Keegan)
The Swordsman (Jane)
Storm Tide (originally Flood Tide by Madelaine Ingram - interestingly, Mel Keegan introduces this novel as being inspired by a short story by "the late Lane E. Ingram.")
Windrage (originally Nothing Left To Lose by Jane and Madelaine Ingram)
There are also a series of Mel Keegan novels set in the 'Hellgate' universe, which was also the setting of Kathy Keegan's The Silence of Knives (although I'm unsure as to whether KK's actual story has been reworked as a Mel Keegan novel).
The above titles are just a few examples, there may well be more (in fact, I'd be very surprised if there weren't!).
Several other familiar names crop up on Mel Keegan's website - the artwork for the novels is the work of 'Jade', one of Mel Keegan's collaborators is 'Jayne DeMarco' (part of whose name will be very familiar to Martin Shaw fans), and another of Dreamcraft's authors is Sara Lansing, who was also one of the old Nuthatch Pros authors.
Intriguingly, nowhere on the website will you find any indication as to Mel Keegan's gender. The whole site is worded very carefully so that no clue is given.
Food for thought!!

There's a couple of other names associated with Jane as well as Kathy Keegan, but I don't have them handy.

And yes, seeing the story titles gathered together in one spot really does bring home how prolific Jane was in Pros - particularly when you realize just how many of the titles listed are from novellas and novels.

It's great to see another list maker in Pros! We've a long and distinguished history here. *BG* As I said in my intro, trying to navigate through thirty plus years of Pros fanworks without the efforts of so many wonderful women who compiled lists and documented fannish history would be virtually impossible. I'm always pleased to add my efforts to the existing Pros infrastructure.
I'm still waiting for the promised fix to the LJ "upgrades" that was promised several months ago. Not a single word since late December. *heavy sigh*
I'll always be a Pros fan - even LJ can't stop that, try though they might. *g* I just wish offline issues would allow more regular online participation but it tends to be in fits and spurts.
Oh, and I saw in a comment somewhere recently that you'll be dealing with hospitals soon youself. Wishing you ALL the best and a very speedy recovery. It's never easy and often traumatic. I hope that your stay is short, uneventful, and very successful!!

Thank you!
Yes, there are several possible psuedonyms attributed to Jane (Kathy Keegan, Madelaine Ingram, and Barb Jones being the most mentioned), as well those that are definitely attached (JJ, Jade, Mel Keegan, her real full name, her married name).
Pseudonyms in fandom are always interesting but tricky to research. I'm always amazed by how many authors will tell you they don't even remember all the names they've used! (Though I suspect sometimes that is to cover their tracks out of embarrassment. *g*)

And fingers crossed that you get Kompozer working properly soon - or find an even easier and better alternative! I have such a list of changes/additions/new info for you it's ridiculous. And I'm still not anywhere near done with the project. *G*

All my own fan writing (not all in Pros by any means) is on AO3. I have also recently started doing voluntary work for them because I think it's such a great idea and a great archive. They are experimenting with hosting archives (especially those that might be at risk for any reason) and histories but of course that means us, fans, uploading stuff. There is also Fanlore, run by AO3/OTW which is begging for contributions on the history of fandom. I am too multi-fandom to consider adding to that but you might well find it a good home for your researches.
I am very tired of LJ's so-called upgrades in many ways, and have moved to Dreamwidth for my 'personal' home though everything is crossposted to LJ. But I still log in for the comms, of course!

I appreciate the compliment. Yes, it was a lot of work, but rewarding.
Regarding the Jane and Kathy Keegan issue, it's clear that there was extremely close collaboration if the works are not the efforts of a single person. And while there are those who have said repeatedly that Jane and Kathy are the same person (sometimes adding in Madelaine Ingram or Barb Jones as well) they never offer up any public proof other than textual analysis and press connections - and none seem to have any personal face-to-face interactions to prove things one way or the other.
Thanks for adding info on the Mel Keegan connection. While I am well aware of her work, I decided not to muddy the waters further for this Pros story list post - plus time constraints meant I barely squeaked under the dealine as it was. *G* It's an interesting connection to explore, witness my recent comments and post on the topic.
Oh, and Sara Lansing's work goes back to the early days of Entropy Express, even before Nut Hatch. Dreamcraft has been the commercial, professional arm of Jane's digital publishing ventures, so it made absolute sense that Dreamcraft would take over publishing the Mel Keegan books once GMP folded and other outside publication contracts ended.

I'm aware of OTW and the various projects it covers, and generally consider them worthwhile while certainly problematical in many areas. I was asked to join the committee for Fanlore back in the earliest organizing stages but offline issues (primarily health related) meant that I declined.
And most of my Pros research ends up on Fanlore even without my direct efforts. It's always a bit disconcerting to see certain idiosyncratic phrasing or info stylings there, particularly if they are without attribution. The inclusion of a typo - and the discussion it provoked - was particularly memorable. *g*
I know the Hatstand archivist is heavily involved with OTW and Fanlore, and so info that I send to her as the Hatstand archivist tends to end up on Fanlore. Also, info I send to
I like Dreamwidth better than LJ in many ways, but I simply cannot keep up with two separate fannish platforms. It is, quite literally, impossible for me. So I very much appreciate those fen who move to DW but continue to cross-post to LJ. Thanks - I hate losing track of Pros people.
