You know, I can't make a complete, cast-in-stone decision about that either way. Sometimes I think they'd tell him right off. It's written that way in a lot of stories and it's always made sense to me. But, on the other side, I could just as easily see them holding off, hoping he won't find out and dreading when he does. Because, though times had changed, they hadn't changed that much. Them being fired was a very real possibility. And while I always feel they would pick each other over the job, I don't think it's something they necessarily want to do.
