heard under the mistletoe

Hello! For today's offering, I have a question for your consideration.

What holiday songs best fit our Lads?

1. For Doyle, while still a copper, thinking about all he has seen on the beat:
(Emo alert!)
"Circle of Steel" sung by Gordon Lightfoot

"Deck the Halls" was the song they played
In the flat next door where they shout all day.
She tips her gin bottle back 'til it’s gone.
The child is strong.
A week, a day, they will take it away,
For they know about all her bad habits.
Christmas dawns and the snow lets up,
And the sun hits the handle of her heirloom cup.
She hides her face in her hands for a while,
Says, "Look here, child.
Your father’s pride was his means to provide
And he’s servin’ three years for that reason."
Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel.
High windows flickerin’ down through the snow -
A time, you know.
Sights and sounds of the people goin’ ’round,
Everybody’s in step with the season.

2. For Bodie, while still a merc, thinking of his life in the jungle:
(Just imagine that lower lip a-pouting!)
"River" sung by Robert Downey, Jr.

It's coming on Christmas.
They're cutting down trees.
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace.
Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.
But it don't snow here:
It stays pretty green.
I'm going to make a lot of money,
Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene...
I wish I had a river so long,
I would teach my feet to fly.

3. For The Cow, ever and always on duty:
(On your bike, lad!)
"March of the Wooden Soldiers" from "The Nutcracker Suite" on guitar by Stevan Pasero

Instrumental

4. And now, for the CI5 Christmas party:
(Required cheer! Yay!)
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" sung by Victoria Williams

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow.
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

5. For The Lads before the party:
(Required wistfulness! Awwww!)
"Song for a Winter's Evening" sung by Sarah McLachlan

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two,
I would be happy just to hold the hand I love
On this winter's night with you.

6. For The Lads during the party, Part I:
(Required angst! Sniffle!)
"Foweles in the Frith" sung by the Mediaeval Baebes

Translation from 15th century Old English:
The birds are in the wood,
The fish are in the river,
And I must be going mad,
For I walk hand in hand
With extreme misery,
And all because
Of the most perfect creature alive.

7. For The Lads during the party, Part 2:
(Required slash! Squee!)
"All I Want for Christmas is You" sung by Olivia Olson

I don't want a lot for Christmas.
There's just one thing I need.
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree.
I just want you for my own,
More than you could ever know.
Make my wish come true -
All I want for Christmas is you.

8. For The Lads after the party:
(Required afterglow! Ahhhh!)
"What are You Doing New Year's Eve?" sung by Vonda Shepard

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night?
Welcoming in the New Year... New Year's Eve.
Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of the thousand invitations you'll receive.
But in case I stand one little chance,
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year's Eve?

9. One more for The Cow, old school style:
(Pour some single malt Scotch and enjoy!)
"Carol of the Bells" by Nox Arcana

Instrumental

10. One last song for all of CI5:
(Gather 'round! Group hug?)
"In Praise of Christmas" sung by Loreena McKennitt

When Christmas's tide comes in a like a bride,
With holly and ivy clad,
Twelve days in the year much mirth and good cheer
In every household is had.
The country guise is then to devise
Some gambols of Christmas play,
Whereat the young men do the best that they can
To drive the cold winter away.

11... AND an encore (with tongue firmly in cheek) in honor of Bodie's inner child:
(Where's the beef?)
"Swiss Colony Beef Log" by Eric Cartman of South Park

Christmas isn't Christmas
Without a Swiss Colony beef log.
Without those cheeses and meat
I don't think I can get along....
Swiss Colony beef log, baby,
That's what Christmas is all about!
A roly-poly Colony beef log, lady,
Makes a little boy scream and shout!

Your thoughts?

Also, in the traditional spirit of "re-gifting" (ha!), here are some of my past creations, offered again in case anyone missed them previously:

1. In honor of one of my very favorite episode, "Heroes," here is my guide to "Crazy" Tommy McKay fan fiction, pictures, and songvids, complete with links. (If you think of anything I've missed, please let me know! Thanks. *g*)

JUST A SHOT AWAY: A Mix for The Professionals

1. It’s A Dangerous World
And heroes are in short supply…

“Gimme Shelter,” The Rolling Stones

See the fire is sweeping our very streets today
Burns like a red coal carpet, mad bull lost its way
War, children, it’s just a shot away, it’s just a shot away
Rape, murder, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away

2. One for The Cow
Loneliness, responsibility, and triple-think in the world of George Cowley…

“The Next Voice You Hear Will Be Your Own,” Jackson Browne

Gather your deeds and your possessions,
Whatever certainty you've known,
Forget your heroes,
You don't really need those last few lessons.
Stand in the open;
The next voice you hear will be your own.

Well alright, they knew how they could hurt you,
And you let them cut you to the bone.
But God forbid,
you allow them to rid you of your virtue!
Forget their laughter;
The next voice you hear will be your own.

Throw down your truth and check your weapons.
Don't look to see if you're alone,
Just stand your ground,
And don't turn around - whatever happens.
Don't ask directions;
The next voice you hear will be your own.

3. CI5’s Finest
On your bikes, lads…

“A Fire is Burning,” Oyster Band

...Names would come like footprints
Whisper on the wind
Lover was a comrade was a stranger was a friend
When we slept our eyes were open
And there's thumping in our chest
That said there is no, there is no, there is no rest
Because a fire is burning in our house, a fire burning in the house of man

We are not beginners
We will not be fooled
The times have been our teachers and they teach in iron rule
We do our best work in the dark
We do our thinking on the run
We will hang together 'til the longest day is done...

4. Requiem for “Crazy” Tommy McKay
Madness is a form of hiding…

“(Wish I Could) Hideaway,” Creedence Clearwater Revival

Well, I know you really never liked the way it all goes down;
Go on, hideaway.
What's that you say?
We're all bound for the graveyard?
Oooh, I wish you well…

5. On the Front Lines
Inspired by “Heroes”…

“When Heroes Go Down,” Suzanne Vega

When heroes go down, they go down fast
So don't expect any time to equivocate the past

When heroes go down, they land in flame
So don't expect any slow and careful settling of blame

I heard you say
You look out for the feet of clay
That someone will be falling next
Without the chance for last respects
You feel the disappointment

When heroes go down, man or woman revealed
You can't expect any kind of mercy on the battlefield

6. Scared All The Time
Inspired by “Mixed Doubles”…

“Put Your Lights On,” Santana with Everlast

Hey now, all you sinners, put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you lovers, put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you killers, put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you children, leave your lights on, you better leave your lights on

Cause there's a monster living under my bed whispering in my ear
There's an angel, with a hand on my head
She says I've got nothing to fear

There's a darkness living deep in my soul
I still got a purpose to serve
So let your light shine, deep into my hole
God, don't let me lose my nerve
Lose my nerve…

7. The Ex-Merc’s Song
Angst from the jungle cat Bodie…

“Human Touch,” Bruce Springsteen

Ain’t no mercy on the streets of this town
Ain’t no bread from heavenly skies
Ain’t nobody drawing wine from this blood
It’s just you and me tonight
Tell me, in a world without pity
Do you think what I’m asking’s too much?
I just want something to hold on to
And a little of that human touch

8. The Ex-Copper’s Song
Angst from the alley cat Doyle…

“Strangers in a Car,” Mark Cohn

You don't know where you're going
You don't know what you're doing
Hell, it might be the highway to heaven
And it might be the road to ruin
But this is a song for strangers in a car
Baby maybe that's all we really are

9. The Breakup
Oh, the pain…

“Breakable,” Fisher

You always try to find what's holding him away from you
But do you ever see your anger standing there right between you?
And every time you throw him to the wall,
Why are you surprised to see he's breakable?

10. The Makeup
Oh, the joy…

“Walking After You,” Foo Fighters

Things just won’t do without you, matter of fact
I’m on your back, I’m on your back, I’m on your back
If you walk out on me, I’m walking after you…

11. The Daily Punishment
It’s not an easy life…

“Do It Again,” Tori Amos

In the morning you go gunning for the man who stole your water
And you fire 'til he is done in but they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singing as they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hanging and they put you on the street
You go back, Jack, do it again
Wheel turning round and round

12. Cheating Death
How much longer before one of them loses the gamble?

“Who By Fire,” Leonard Cohen

And who by fire, who by water,
Who in the sunshine, who in the night time,
Who by high ordeal, who by common trial,
Who in your merry merry month of May,
Who by very slow decay,
And who shall I say is calling?

And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate,
Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt,
And who by avalanche, who by powder,
Who for his greed, who for his hunger,
And who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent, who by accident,
Who in solitude, who in this mirror,
Who by his lady's command, who by his own hand,
Who in mortal chains, who in power,
And who shall I say is calling?

13. Burnout
It does really matter... doesn’t it?

“In the End,” Linkin Park

I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so far
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn’t even matter

14. Anthem for CI5
For those who serve…

“Brothers in Arms,” Dire Straits

And though it had hurt me so bad in the fear and alarm
You did not desert me, my brothers in arms
