Questions relating to quotes from fiction
15. Which stories do the following quotes come from?
a) Two hours later, well into the still watches of the night, they were still reading. The study was absolutely silent, except for their murmurs of delight, and the odd "here, this one's good." Their fingers brushed as they exchanged stories, and their heads were bent together over their unexpected treasure-trove. Doyle's curls brushed against Bodie's short crop, and tickled his ears. Bodie leaned a companionable arm on Doyle as his attention was drawn to a particularly good passage. Their breath commingled, expelled from their lungs in the same companionable rhythm, marking out the cadences of the prose. They were cocooned together in silence, rapt in the glow of a heaven made out of words and lamplight.
b) Heart slamming against his chest, he took the last step just as Cowley's hand touched the car door. Shock registered on the older man's face, but it was too late.
The sensation of victory filled him as a vision of Cowley already dead on the ground flashed before his eyes. Then the door to the back room of his mind opened onto hell. It compelled him to step into the light, flip the Browning around his trigger finger and offer it, butt first, to George Cowley.
"Name's Bodie," he said, "I want to work for you."
c) Later, much later, after he had been forced to acknowledge time and again the power this one man had gained over him, he began to see that the knife cut both ways--or rather, the metaphorical leash Bodie had locked around his throat was as firmly buckled about Bodie's own neck. And deep in his head, something angry, hurting and vindictive, resenting the role chosen for him, promised a revenge. Two could play at that game, and if Bodie hadn't realised it yet, he would soon enough.
d) Bodie's rouged and embellished face stared into his, oddly enough not unattractive, a very handsome woman, you might say. Twin fluorescent earrings in the shape of cherries dangled beneath his ears; his pale skin was gilded with cosmetics. Yet looking out at Doyle from this stranger's face were the eyes of the man he knew better than anyone. Bizarre. He didn't know if he liked the way it made him feel, but it was better than other things waiting in the wings for him to feel. Exciting, in a way. Rather wicked.
e) When the world exploded around him.
What the. . . Without conscious thought, Ray dropped to his knees, taking cover under the rack of clothing, as the building shook and lights shattered, spraying glass. Bits of plaster rained down; he choked as dust clogged the air. Over the ringing in his ears, several women screamed, high-pitched, quavering, and a man shouted, sounding as if he were in pain. Once the debris stopped falling, Ray scrambled to his feet and quickly surveyed the damage, wiping grit from his face. His hand shook a little from the familiar surge of adrenaline. The building appeared structurally sound, but he waited a moment, in case there was another explosion – a gas pipe? Something more sinister? – then headed to the doors.
Non-fiction questions (episodes etc)
16. Hospitals feature in several Pros episodes. Can you name the actor who plays a hospital doctor in at least two episodes (perhaps 3 but I can't remember the third one) and who went on to become a well known international actor?
17. Can you name the partners of Bodie and Doyle in their pre-Ci5 careers?
18. What is the connection between The Professionals and Star Wars?
19. Bodie's not just a pretty face and in two episodes he displays knowledge of 2 literary figures. Who are they and in which episodes are they mentioned?
20. Can you name one area in London where Doyle worked as a policeman?
21. What is the connection between the international comedian, Billy Connolly, and Pros?
22. Pros has at least two connections to the films of James Bond. Can you name them?

Re: 2008 DIAL A'CAROLLING Christmas Quiz - Part 2
2. Wonderful Tonight by Sebastian Yes!
The Return by Ellis Ward Yes!
Face Value by Pam Rose Yes!
Blood Still Cries by Deb Hicks Yes!
3. On This Day in History by Slantedlight Yes!
4. Underworld by KWS Yes!
5. Two favorites are The Flat by DVS and Yes!
Arabian Nights by Pam Rose. Yes!
6. The Secrets Beneath by Sally Fell Yes!
7. This is one of those questions with several possible answers. The first two Pros stories that come to mind are Bodie's Luck by Stew and Poison Apples by Pam Rose.
Stew ...Paradise is a space station in the Alliance-Union universe, and ...is also mentioned in Bodie's Luck. Yes! Yes!
Alternatively, Paradise is the way that Lord Summerisle describes Summerisle in Poison Apples by Pam Rose - though Ray & Bodie would surely dispute that! Pam Rose based her Pros AU Poison Apples on the book and film "The Wicker Man" by Anthony Shafer. Hmmn... Shall be picky here and note that 'Paradise' was capitalised in the question, but isn't actually given as the name of the island in Poison Apples...
8. Sunshine After Rain by Elspeth Leigh Yes!
9. Torch Song by Courtney Gray Yes!
10. Masquerade by Tarot Yes!
11. Patterns in Walls by Debra Hicks Yes!
12. Wish I Wasn't Here by M. Fae Glasgow Yes!
13. B&D Beside the Sea by Sebastian Yes!
14. On Guard by Gloria Lancaster Yes!
15. a)Dog Eat Dog by Dog Rose Yes!
b) Whisper of a Kill by Lois Welling AKA Ann Barrister Yes!
c) Consequences by Chris Power AKA Tarot and A. N. Other Yes!
d) Pantomime by Sebastian Yes!
e) And Close the Path by Sihaya Black Yes!
16. I'll go with Art Malik as the answer Yes!
17. Doyle's named partner in the police force was Syd Parker. Yes!
With Bodie, it depends on how you're defining partners ...I'd call Bodie's work with Keller more a partnership than Bodie's work with others while a mercenary. Yes!
18. Ian McDiarmid Yes!
19. Samuel Becket: "Life in a word--if." Yes!
John Keats: "Alone and palely loitering." Yes!
20. Doyle worked in the East End, more specifically Stepney Green. In the episode "Hunter, Hunted" Kathie references Doyle's days as a beat cop: "You were a busy young copper. The terror of Stepney Green."
Ooh now, interesting one... I've always taken that line to be a teasing reference to the musical rather than a literal description of Doyle's past, but actually there's no reason why she mightn't have meant it literally, so to be fair - Yes!
21. Rather roundabout. Pamela Stephenson was (is?) married to Billy Connolly. Yes!
22. There are several connections between Pros and the James Bond films, involving both major stars and smaller character roles. Before Pierce Brosnan starred as James Bond, he had a minor role in the Pros episode "Blood Sports" as the radio operator in the "buggy-boo". Yes!
Lewis Collins himself was reputed to be under consideration for the James Bond role at one time. Yes!
... Goodness me, you're a veritable Bond-Pros encyclopaedia! No extra points though I'm afraid! Not that you need them... *g*
34/35 - for the third year in a row (I believe) that makes you our glorious quiz winner! *vbg*
I still owe you the prize from last year too (I've been trying to get hold of you!), and there is one again for this year - if you're able to let me know where I should send them that would be fab!
Hurrah, and well done!
