I hope you don't mind me popping in like this - I don't get to read much online - but I just wanted to tell you how very, very impressed I was by this story. It was just... so clever - the use of that concept- hubris - to illustrate who B and D are. In Bodie's case his hubris was connected to the job - that's where his truest self-belief and confidence lie I think - that's where he overestimates his ability to deal with things on his own. Doyle's hubris was his belief in his own emotional intelligence - at least as compared with Bodie;). In this story he thinks he can handle Bodie, decide what he needs - manipulates him basically - and in the truest tradition of hubris, almost loses it all. Its a gem of insight into the pair of them.
So - the first bit was wonderful - I liked the beginning-of-series feel to it, the spot-on dialogue and your intensely visual style of describing action. And I really, really loved the emotional challenge and insight of the second bit - Doyle's smugness at first in thinking he could manoeuvre Bodie, while Bodie was - what? Terrified of his own feelings? The intensity of his emotions for Doyle after being fucked?
Then - the bit where Doyle figures it out was extraordinarily well done. I could *feel* the tension in my gut as he realised something was wrong (brilliant use of a clue there - it really was believable) and then as he figured it out... well I thought that was sublime writing- really visceral stuff. I felt nervous reading it - felt his panic and his desperation - and all in the middle of a hot-as-hell sex scene. Amazing!
Anyway - again - sorry to butt in, but I really wanted you to know how good this was.:)
