Happy Boxing Day! Must admit I neeeearly forgot I said I'd cover today, but phew, made it in time!

Some of you have seen this story, I'm afraid, in this year's FandomCards, but people who haven't... here's a wee fic. *g*

A Christmas Card for Ray Doyle
by Slantedlight

It was the worst kind of Wednesday. Grey skies drizzled grey rain, and the wind made it proper brass monkey weather. Doyle pushed himself away from their office window - tiny and cracked across one corner, but at least a window - and turned around to stare at his partner’s bowed head. He’d barely glanced up when Doyle burst in like a bored thunderstorm, and had given him the briefest of nods. He was writing what looked like a letter, which was strange enough, but he also had a pile of envelopes beside him, each one neatly addressed in Bodie’s oddly tidy handwriting. It almost looked like…

Are you writing Christmas cards...? )

Okay, I have a confession - my story isn't quite finished, so this is kind of a place-holder post. It would have been finished, except that about twenty minutes ago my other laptop, the one I was writing on, completely black-screened on me, and I lost the last five minutes of writing I'd done. So I had to mess around, and thank goodness got it to start up again and rescued the rest of my story and sent it fast to myself by email, but... now it's quarter to midnight, and not only do I not have time to finish before midnight, but I have work tomorrow morning, so... Waaaah!

So I have posted all but the last few paragraphs (which are only written in my head) below, and I really recommend that you don't read them yet! I will try and finish tomorrow, and then remove this header from the post so that you can see it's done and ready to read.

And I was having a perfectly good winter solstice day until that happened!

Happy Winter Solstice, northern hemisphere!

I'm not quite ready to make my main post for today, but I wanted to post this first, for various reasons. *g*

I hope my lovely sender doesn't mind, but I am going to start by sharing a Pros FandomCard that I received this year!

Solstice Card from C

It combines all the things I love about this season. *g* It also reminded me very much of some fic I wrote, which seemed fitting.

What a fun game for today's Discovered in the Wassail Bowl! [livejournal.com profile] tinturtle invited us to post our coloured-in pictures here to the comm, so that's what I'm doing. I wasn't clever enough to work out digital colouring, so mine is coloured in with pencils, and a couple of other bits and bobs. Unlike Doyle, I'm not sure I should have been artistic, but it was fun - thank you! *g*

Looming Danger
by Slantedlight

Doyle took a last hard look around the yellowed grass of the lawn, and gave up with a long sigh. He could hear Cole now - Doyle’s always dropping his! - and he wasn’t wrong. He’d dropped himself right in it this time, an’ all.

Cowley was still talking to Bodie over by the house, and there was a solitary vehicle left in the driveway, so they were obviously expected to chauffeur their boss home. He was well and truly done.

Bodie looked up and raised an eyebrow as he sauntered over to them - or tried his best to saunter, but he could feel the nervous energy thrumming through him.

“Ah, Doyle - about time.” Cowley frowned, and started to turn away. “Come on - we’ll stop off at that pub by the crossroads. You might even deserve a pint on me.”

Bodie was already rubbing his hands together - Doyle shook his head minutely, scrunched his face in self-rebuke.

“Uh… Sorry sir - I’m not quite finished here.”

“Not finished?” Cowley looked back at him. “What do you mean, not finished? There’s not a loose end left - I made sure of that!”

“Sewn up tighter than a Scotsman on Burns Night.”

Happy solstice everyone!

I'm on the non-lads' side of the world this year, where it's summer solstice, and so I'm posting early for a change (well, the sun's going to set here soon, but it's early by my usual standards).

This was an experiment - [livejournal.com profile] chaospuppy4537 asked me if I knew of any Pros AU Coffee Shop fics, and I couldn’t think of/find a single one. We talked about how it could only work in a modern setting, because they didn’t have that type of coffee shop back in the lads’ time, which meant they’d definitely be modern AU lads, and of course it got me thinking I might give it a try. So I did. I had a slightly longer plot than I had writing time of course. And whether I pulled off modern-lads who are still our lads is up to you to decide… or even the whole coffee-shop trope in general! I’m not convinced, but I hope it’s close enough to be okay. And if it’s not - sorry [livejournal.com profile] chaospuppy4537!

Coffee in Five
by Slantedlight

Monday
A cold grey fog had settled over London in the night, shrouding the Thames and clinging to skyscrapers, so thick in the air that Doyle was sure he could taste it. It tasted of the river, and the distant sea which had crept up to her overnight, touching her with salt and mingling with her sand and ancient mud. It settled in a thousand droplets over his hair, his clothes, his face, as he walked his lonely 5.00am path to work, and he pulled his jacket closer against the chill.

When he finally reached the door, the shop was just as cold and dark, as if sulking that it had been abandoned all night, everything cast in shadows and mysterious shapes by the streetlight outside, like something from The Third Man.

That had been on the other night )

This story has been several years in the making, although you might not think so when you see it. I was hoping it would be longer - and it still might be if it takes people's fancy - but I decided that it really had to be posted this year, in case it never ever was at all!

Its also unusual in that I have to give you a link to the story. I can't post it here, which is what I ask everyone to do, because this is a community, where we can gather to comment and chat in the comments and so on. We can't do that if we're scattered in hundreds of other sites instead. But - you'll see why it's impossible to post to [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj if you decide to read this story. Stories. Story. *g*

I am going to create a paper version of the story, and work out a way to offer it to people. Again, you'll see why this is more complicated than it sounds when you see the fic!

Finally - I think I've managed to clean it all up properly, but if you come across any broken links or anything that looks odd (or typos - my keyboard has been playing up... or maybe my fingers... *g*) then do let me know. I am not only me, but also [livejournal.com profile] ci5chooseastory of course!

But without further ado... *g*

I'm hoping to make a proper post later today (possibly much later today...) but to start with - Happy Winter Solstice (and of course Summer Solstice for anyone down under *g*)!

It's still dark, as I write this at 7.29am, but the sun will rise soon on the shortest day of the year, and then it's all returning light after that! *g*

For this first post at the start of the shortest day, I have found some Winter Solstice stories, for a Winter Solstice Story List!

Holly Golly by Asymphototropic (in ProsLib)
In Hot Water: an Idyll by JM (in ProsLib)
The Longest Shortest Day by Slantedlight
Ordinary Magic: A Tale of the Winter Solstice by Mizelle (in ProsLib)
Perfect Alignment by Slantedlight
Red Christmas by Cassie Ingaben

This was just a quick search, and I'm sure there must be more, so please do suggest stories, and I'll add them to the list. And otherwise - happy reading! *g*
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
Today's post is by way of being an idea - something that suddenly occurred to me as I was thinking about Pros FandomCards, and how nice it was to receive our lads in the post over Christmas, and gorgeously creative people were, and... I bet you can see where this is going, can't you? *g*

I wondered if it might be fun to have a Pros Birthday Club as well - it would sort of run the same way, where anyone who wanted to join would send me their contact information, and likes and adores and dislikes, and I would then collate the information into a Pros Birthday Club List and then send it to Club members, and when someone's birthday came up, the others on the list would send them a wee Pros card in the post, so that just like with Pros FandomCards we'd get a little flurry of Pros through the post on our birthdays!

Suggestions/thoughts/other ideas very welcome - what do you reckon? Could it fly? Be something else that our fab Pros community has together? Please let me know what you think!

[Poll #2128634]

And in case it's just a lousy idea - have our lads out on the town together! *g*

Happy Winter Solstice! And of course summer solstice, for some people. *g*

For the third year in a row I've not managed to finish my Big Story Project, but I can at least offer a littler Pros fic for you - one with the promise of sunshine to come!

The Loaded Gun
by Slantedlight

“You know, we could have been anyone,” Doyle said, gazing around them. “Insurance salesmen, brain surgeons…”

“Deep sea divers?” Bodie was too comfortable to move, the sand just right under his towel, arms stretched up and head cradled perfectly on his hands, the Spanish sun on his face as hot as it had ever been in Africa, but he opened his eyes and squinted up. The expanse of Doyle’s naked back stretched beside him, already tinged a warm old-gold. He was still sitting up, feet planted firmly apart, arms loosely clasped around bent knees, scanning the ranks of other holiday-makers splayed on the beach around them. Not just nosiness, Bodie thought, Doyle still hadn’t relaxed into their two weeks away yet, was still a little tense at the idea of not having his shooter with him in case they might need it. A little tense at the idea of what that shooter could do.

No guns through Heathrow this time... )

I am really really aware that I said hey, let's all post lots of Pros, and then I didn't... *headdesk* It's not that I've not been doing Pros - I even managed a wee something during my weekly writing group last week, and finally finished it off... *g*

Every Day is Autumn
by Slantedlight

There was nothing, Doyle thought, that would make the world right again. It was over, all over. He took a breath of cold air, only because he had to, and realised that it had started to drizzle, a fine mess across his face and down his neck. It gathered on the autumn leaves in the gutter beside him, shining them to irreverent jewel-like reds and yellows under the streetlight.

In the distance the ambulance drivers were finally being allowed to move the body, were hefting it onto a stretcher, one at each end so that it sagged a little in the middle as they lifted.

He didn't care... )

For [livejournal.com profile] firlefanzine

"Just get down there, he says." Doyle was practically spitting with rage as they walked past the rows of tiered seats to a - somewhat - quieter area. "Just blend in and keep an eye out, he says." He stopped abruptly enough that Bodie almost ran into him, plonked himself down on the wooden bench, and yanked one of his trainers off. “We’ve not had an afternoon off in weeks, and…”

Bodie sat down beside him and gave him a sideways glance before reaching down to unlace his own brogues. "Cool it, Ray," he suggested, without much hope. "We'll probably never lay eyes on the man. Jax and Benny'll pull him in the staffroom and we'll go home and..."

With our luck? )

My second offering today is by way of an apology for posting something that some people have already read - although it's something I've done before, and you might be tired of it anyway. *g*

I rather ironically have a more relaxed workday today, and so if anyone would like to give me a prompt for the lads, then I will write them a wee ficlet to post today too. *g* Any ficlet I write will be focussed on the lads in the new year (cos it's the 6th January), and apart from that I will incorporate whatever prompt/s you offer. (But I tend to do better when I'm given more random-seeming word prompts rather than very specific plots etc. to work to, because it gives me space to stretch and wiggle in a fic! *g*)

So... would anyone like another wee story today? *g*

It may not surprise you to hear that for the second year in a row I have failed to finish my Story Project in time to post for my Dialj day... I kept being hopeful, but as soon as I was back to work I knew it was probably not a goer... :(

But I have, of course, cobbled together some other things to post today! The first one is something a few people will have read, but I haven't posted it online yet. You'll need to wisk yourself back in time nearly two weeks (well, plus the forty-odd years to our lads' time in CI5)...

A Little Warmth at Christmas
by Slantedlight

Two o’clock, Bodie thought as chimes rang out in the downstairs flat, and all is well. Or at least as well as it could be with not a sign of Allan and his gang, the central heating off, and more draughts in this place than he’d had girls in his bed. Or blokes, he thought, because it seemed like he was always thinking about that again these days, and the reason was lying not two foot away, fast asleep.

They’d swapped shifts barely an hour ago, Bodie’s eyes gritted with not enough sleep for the last week, and Doyle seemed to have flaked out as soon as his head hit the floor. Ray’s eyes had been black with exhaustion, that cheek standing out sharply, and Bodie’d wondered if he looked as bad himself. He was still now, anyway, and Bodie hoped he was warm enough, because he’d stripped off his jacket to sleep, and just laid it over the grey wool blankets. They should have brought the sleeping bags, but there’d been no time, not after a twelve-hour shift leaping around after Billy Smith, and no one else free to set the place up for them. Christmas was turning out to be a busy time for CI5 this year.

He tugged his own blanket... )

Hello, and happy 18th December! My present for Dialj-readers and Pros fans in general is something that will hopefully be long-lasting and interactive (like all good toys *g*).

I have made a new Pros comm! I know, I know - in these days of lj-passing-us-by, what use is another Pros lj going to be? Well, it has long occured to me that we have nowhere to save our Pros ephemera in a single place where people can find it easily. You know the kind of things - newspaper and magazine articles, autographed pictures, scribbled notes, images and reviews of plays that the lads (or anyone from Pros) were in years later. So... I have made somewhere!

I hope that lots of people will share and archive things here for us all to wander and browse, and for future Pros fans to find. At least that was the thought!

So without futher ado, I give you: [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq_dnoticed! And if nothing else, maybe there's a bit of interesting reading or pic-gazing for you tonight. *g*

Come and see what's here! Join the comm! Come and play!

I'm cheating, I'm afraid, because I've been totally distracted by the bizarre scenes in Washington tonight, from finishing the fic I was going to post. I will finish it, and post it here before I go to bed... but it's going to take me slightly longer!

In the meantime, have one last shiny bauble while you're waiting...

Christmas Feast
by Slantedlight

They came together that night because neither of them had any other place to go. It was after 11pm on Christmas eve, and even the pubs were shut, everyone getting ready for a cosy night, for Father Christmas, and stockings and trees. Still hyped up on blood and adrenaline, Doyle hadn’t said anything when Bodie turned off the car engine outside his place, and claimed that was as far as he was going because his heating was off and he’d run out of booze.

They both knew that wasn’t why.

Can't remember where I got this one from - annoyingly I've not recorded provenience (bad me...), but I like the way it describes the lads as staying in touch, and how nice MS is about LC. *g*
JawsBeckonShaw (WDWpremiereMeeting)

Martin Shaw, who as Doyle in The Professionals, portrayed one of ITV's roughest toughest, and staunchest guardians of law and order, has a reunion with his old partner Lewis Collins (Bodie in the series).
The occasion was a previous of a block-busting adventure movie, Who Dares Wins, in which Lewis stars as an SAS man.
"It was good to see Lewis again," he said. "In fact, it was a bit of a reunion of The Professionals all round. Ian Sharp, the director, has worked on The Professionals, as have a number of the technicians employed on the film.
"I thought that it was a great, action-packed adventure film, and a good break for Lewis. He gives a first-class performance.
"Would I have liked to been in it? Well that's a bit of an unfair question. Frankly I don't think that I would have been as good as Lewis in that role. Its much more suited to him than to me.
"It's not the kind of role that I am particularly looking for, but on the other hand who can honestly say whether they would have taken a particular role had it been offered to them, and had the money been right. I just don't know. I only know that Lewis has done very well, and I am very glad for him."

It's the last day of the challenge, and the first time I've posted on this day of the calendar. I've got something I'm hoping to finish (and something that I didn't finish at all - waah), but those will be for later, and in the meantime I'm going to have a rummage around in the box today and see if I can find a few more baubles to post, and pretty-up our flists... *g*

I started off with a quick rummage around the British Newspaper Archive, where I found this, from the Reading Evening Post on Wednesday 07 October 1981. It's a new picture to me too, though I've seen him in similar poses in pics - how fun to still be able to find new things about our lads *g*. Transcription under the pic, because they're not the clearest of images.
1981-10-07 MSopensnewflats

"Television tough guy Martin Shaw added the professional touch when he unveiled a group of new flats yesterday.
And the heart-throb actor, star of The Professionals series, showed he is just as at home with a whisk as he is with a gun.
"I'm playing the host today," he said as he invited visitors to look round the new flats for single people on the New Park development at Tadley.
They have been designed by Wimpey Homes Holdings Limited and to make sure they had the right image they asked Martin to choose the furniture and fittings.
The bedsitter flats are fully furnished and the first eight put on sale for £16,985 were sold within 48 hours. It is hoped about 1000 will be on the market throughout England by the middle of next year.
Mr Donald Macpherson, chairman of Wimpey Homes Holdings Ltd said at the opening he hoped the new flats would solve the problems facing so many single people who wanted to buy their own homes.
He added "The decor and furnishing have been personally, and dare I say it, professionally chosen by Martin Shaw to help create the feel of carefree modern living."

Wow - can you imagine having bought the flat decorated by our Doyle (yes, I know, our MS - but I did say imagine *g*)?! I had a quick google to see if I could find out whethere the flats were still there (bet they're worth a bit more than £17,000 now...) but google isn't playing nicely... I'd love to see the decor he chose!

Hmmn - also, I'm getting quite the Raymond Dibble vibes from this photo... *g*

I've been very much anticipated in this I see, but Christmas day (lads' time) is free-posting-day again this year! Do feel free to post extra Pros-y treats to Discovered in a Box of Baubles today - it would be lovely to see them! *g*
