2018 DuaMidnightClear

MidnightClear CloudlessBanner1320x660
Well, this is the day that makes me sad - the end of the brightness in our December/New Year days. It's time to put Discovered on a Midnight Clear away again.

As usual I've linked everyone's posts to their squares on the calendar below (and the original one, actually!), so if there was a day that you missed you can hover on the square and it will show you whose day it was, but you can now also click on it to be taken directly to the posts for that day. And the banner and its link to the challenge will be up on the User Info page with all our other archives in the next few days.

Thank you so much to everyone for joining in - whether you chose a day, posted once, twice or thrice or more, whether you read or commented, or just generally glowed with our lads at Christmas. Happy 2019 everyone - here's to a lovely Pros-y year for all of us, and may the lads' midnights always be clear! Well, unless they happen to get lost together in the fog somewhere, and end up trapped in some small space, very close to each other and desperately trying to keep warm just to survive the night, except that then their warm bodies together made them realise that... well. You know the drill. *g*

The lads’ inability to talk to each other on a personal level has disastrous consequences.

Ray was disorientated when he first woke up. The room was unfamiliar and he tried to recall who he had left the stag party with. He lay quietly for a few minutes, listening to her soft snores, then realised he wasn’t really interested in finding the answer. Quietly slipping from the bed, he retrieved his scattered clothing and cautiously found his way to the bathroom, where he hurriedly dressed before leaving.

He drove home instinctively, totally unaware of his surroundings, his thoughts a confusion of doubts and disbelief.

What the hell had he been thinking, saying yes when Bodie asked him to be his best man? Well, now the day of reckoning had arrived and he was expected to stand there and watch the man he adored tie the knot. Could he really do that?

And after the nuptials, what then? How on earth was their working partnership going to withstand the inevitable changes a marriage would bring? It occurred to him for the first time that Bodie might well have had similar fears when he’d announced his own engagement to Ann. But then he hadn’t gone through with his wedding plans had he, not like Bodie was about to? Well, to be honest, it was Ann who had actually walked away but he would have called it off, eventually, because marrying her would have been as hopeless as pissing in the wind. He understood that now but at the time… at the time he had so wanted to be engaged, so wanted that promise of everlasting happiness and yes, he had very nearly been swept along with the whole bloody romantic notion of it all.

By the time he arrived back home he knew what he had to do - but how was a different matter altogether. Sitting at the table in his chilly kitchen, he weighed up his options over a pot of tea. He’d never considered himself a coward before but, remembering how he’d reacted to Bodie’s confession all those months ago, there was no way on earth he could face a confrontation today - and he doubted the groom would appreciate one either. So, he grabbed the notebook he kept by the phone and tried to put down on paper some sort of explanation. But what could he say if it wasn’t the truth?

He was relieved to see that Bodie’s building was still shrouded in darkness when he pulled up outside an hour or so later. Using the spare key, he crept in and propped the envelope, containing the wedding ring and a brief note, up against the kettle. From the sounds coming from the bedroom it was obvious that someone, probably Murphy, had made sure Bodie got back home safely. That was just another thing for him to add to the list of things he felt guilty about; not watching over him during his last night of freedom.

Unable to resist the temptation, Doyle quietly pushed open the door and smiled to himself as he stood and watched Bodie sleep, mouth open, bent arm resting over his forehead, snoring away obliviously. It really must be love if he found that gormless look so appealing. God, he was going to miss the daft pillock while he was away.

“Good luck, mate. See you when you get back in a couple of weeks,” he whispered before he finally closed the door on a lost opportunity and went back home to his empty flat.

Always right up to the whistle - even when there's two of us... *g*

Where All This Started
by HambelandJemima and Slantedlight

Something was wrong with Bodie. Doyle watched him through slitted eyes from the sofa, the way he gathered the detritus of their meal together; plates clanked into a pile, cutlery jangled on top, a bottle of brown sauce and one of ketchup in his other hand, and then off to the kitchen.

It wasn’t that Bodie never cleared away after they’d eaten together - but he never did it without at least a token complaint, and a quiet Bodie was usually something to worry about. He’d been in a strange mood all night in fact, either too hail-fellow-well-met and matey jokes, or oddly serious and… quiet. As if, Doyle thought suddenly, he was waiting for something, and didn’t know whether it was going to be a good something or the kind of something that required gritted teeth and clenched fists. He’d been funny about coming over in the first place, come to think of it, as if…

The wind tore through him as he raced through the deserted streets – snow whirling in flurries like mini tornadoes, battering his face, making it difficult to see, let alone catch their quarry. Markham was a nasty drug dealer who preyed on the young and immature, and who had somehow managed to evade the noose as CI5 has surrounded his base of operations. Only luck and his partner’s eagle eyesight had picked him up as he escaped on foot. Bodie lost track of his partner in the blinding snow and only the sound of pounding feet kept him on the right track.

Bodie blinked to clear his eyes and then there was no time and he had run into his partner, recognised by his plaid jacket, nearly flipping over the top of him as they collided.

“Ooof. Doyle, what the hell?” Bodie proclaimed, taking a moment to catch his breath and exclaiming his confusion and aggression in that one quick question. With adrenaline coursing through his veins after the long chase and the cold suffusing his bones, he had no patience and moved to take up the chase again, when he realised that things were not well with his partner.

Bodie and Doyle had a hard year and were involved in some difficult cases.

Doyle is speaking with Jax about the time Bodie was taken hostage by a band of terrorists...

Doyle has a reputation for falling into a dark mood, anger or depression, at the end of an op. Sometimes even if they've won, if they didn't win the right way, by his standards. Bodie usually shrugs it off, laughs and stands a round down the pub, pulls the prettiest birds and winks over his shoulder on the way out.Read more... )

Changing Partners

Another day, another Christmas party – I don’t even know whose party it is.

The only thing I know is the clothes and songs are different to yesterday.
And somehow, this dreamy and soulful music is getting under my skin.
Shit, the music’s making me go soft – that’s never happened before !
And anyway, where is my bloody partner ?

Created 3 years ago for [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj – Discovered in a Christmas Cracker.

It's one of my favourite Christmas songs, and as our lads spend a lot of time in their car(s) driving, I think the song suits them perfectly, as does the fuzzy, blurred vintage look I tried for.

25Dec ChristmasCard

I hope everyone's having (had/about to have!) a lovely day! I've been pipped to the post by someone with a good memory (*waves to [livejournal.com profile] merentha13*), but just to remind everyone else - today is a Christmas Posting Party here on Discoveredinalj!

If you would like to make a Pros-y post of anything at all, then please do - let's see if we can fill up the day with our lads and CI5, for those moments when people just need a bit of peace and quiet from all the other festivities. *g* And lads. For when people need our lads. *vbg*
