Twelfth Night has been and gone, and yesterday's posts were the last for Discovered in the Wrapping Paper. I hope you found some nice things this year, and had fun both wrapping for other people and unwrapping all the posts that were made - I know I did. *g* And I still have posts I need to go back and read and comment on too, which is the kind of tidying up I don't mind doing. *g*

The posts will of course stay here in discoveredinalj, easily found via the Challenge Banners on the User Info page, and also via the tags, by author/poster, as an archive, and if you haven't already done so, do archive them somewhere else too, so we know they're always safe - back-ups are always good, right? *g* Oh, and of course you can click right through to them via the icons on the calendar below!

Thank you everyone who took part, whether posting or reading or commenting - it can't happen without you. For the last few years especially I've been wondering if there are so many fewer of us that it won't be able to happen, but we're still here. We might need to shrink the calendar down a bit next year (maybe start from 12th December so that we can go through to the 6th of January), because we're needing people to take two or three extra days to make it stretch at the moment - but we'll see what the year brings.

So - happy 2022 everyone. May you have a wonderful year, and may the lads and lasses of CI5 be right there with us all the way!

Skater Boys
by Slantedlight

For [livejournal.com profile] firlefanzine

"Just get down there, he says." Doyle was practically spitting with rage as they walked past the rows of tiered seats to a - somewhat - quieter area. "Just blend in and keep an eye out, he says." He stopped abruptly enough that Bodie almost ran into him, plonked himself down on the wooden bench, and yanked one of his trainers off. “We’ve not had an afternoon off in weeks, and…”

Bodie sat down beside him and gave him a sideways glance before reaching down to unlace his own brogues. "Cool it, Ray," he suggested, without much hope. "We'll probably never lay eyes on the man. Jax and Benny'll pull him in the staffroom and we'll go home and..."

With our luck? )

My second offering today is by way of an apology for posting something that some people have already read - although it's something I've done before, and you might be tired of it anyway. *g*

I rather ironically have a more relaxed workday today, and so if anyone would like to give me a prompt for the lads, then I will write them a wee ficlet to post today too. *g* Any ficlet I write will be focussed on the lads in the new year (cos it's the 6th January), and apart from that I will incorporate whatever prompt/s you offer. (But I tend to do better when I'm given more random-seeming word prompts rather than very specific plots etc. to work to, because it gives me space to stretch and wiggle in a fic! *g*)

So... would anyone like another wee story today? *g*

It may not surprise you to hear that for the second year in a row I have failed to finish my Story Project in time to post for my Dialj day... I kept being hopeful, but as soon as I was back to work I knew it was probably not a goer... :(

But I have, of course, cobbled together some other things to post today! The first one is something a few people will have read, but I haven't posted it online yet. You'll need to wisk yourself back in time nearly two weeks (well, plus the forty-odd years to our lads' time in CI5)...

A Little Warmth at Christmas
by Slantedlight

Two o’clock, Bodie thought as chimes rang out in the downstairs flat, and all is well. Or at least as well as it could be with not a sign of Allan and his gang, the central heating off, and more draughts in this place than he’d had girls in his bed. Or blokes, he thought, because it seemed like he was always thinking about that again these days, and the reason was lying not two foot away, fast asleep.

They’d swapped shifts barely an hour ago, Bodie’s eyes gritted with not enough sleep for the last week, and Doyle seemed to have flaked out as soon as his head hit the floor. Ray’s eyes had been black with exhaustion, that cheek standing out sharply, and Bodie’d wondered if he looked as bad himself. He was still now, anyway, and Bodie hoped he was warm enough, because he’d stripped off his jacket to sleep, and just laid it over the grey wool blankets. They should have brought the sleeping bags, but there’d been no time, not after a twelve-hour shift leaping around after Billy Smith, and no one else free to set the place up for them. Christmas was turning out to be a busy time for CI5 this year.

He tugged his own blanket... )

The OH and I have been spending some of our increased time at home playing the DC Universe Online video game. One project we gave ourselves was to make Bodie and Doyle avatars and send them on a mission.

Warning: the character creation system really only allows 3 body types, and limited personality and dress options. So don't expect exact likenesses.

Theme music and video editing by B (who played Bodie, which is why he's front and centre the most). The dropbox link should allow you to view online or download.

A triptych is a work in three parts, and there will be three parts to this one, but time-zones being what they are I need to sleep a little first. Herewith then, parts 1 and 2. Part 3 to come before midnight Lads’ time.

Happy New Year!

May 2022 be filled with new adventures.

(The good kind.)
[identity profile] tango65.livejournal.com

They thought it was over. The Charity Christmas party had gone smoothly.  The hundreds of children who had attended had unwrapped their gifts and had now gone, leaving mountains of wrapping paper, congealing food and hours of clean up in their wake.

Unfortunately, for the Ci5 contingent in attendance, a different type of clean up was now needed from them, just when they thought they had successfully avoided such a requirement.

Bodie grimaced again, as he stood stock still, a gun repeatedly shoved against his temple, a cornered man holding it there, desperately demanding money and transport.  Not only had this man's assassination attempt on the visiting Minister come too late (he was long gone), but all of his co-conspirators had been captured, caught unawares by the Ci5 contingent awating their arrival.

The man, whom Bodie knew as Decker, was negotiating with Cowley, who was safely behind the wall in another room. All the rest of Ci5 had also been evacuated out, but Bodie knew they were at all escape routes, looking for that one moment, that could bring this mess to an end.

The wrapping paper rattled in the room, causing Decker to startle and jab that gun again in Bodie's temple.  "Easy mate", he said quietly to the frantic man, "its only the wrapping paper settling."  "Shut your mouth" Decker snarled, "you're only here to ensure I get out of here safe and well."  Bodie shut it, knowing that the chances of that happening in Decker's favour were not good. From where he was standing, it was not looking optimistic for him coming out unscathed either.

Bodie's mind turned to Doyle.  Doyle had seen Decker behind Bodie, but too late to yell a warning and Bodie was in the way, so a shot was not possible. Their eyes had met once he was taken and Bodie saw in Doyle's eyes, all the reassurance he needed - his partner was safe and working on making him so as well.  Then he was turned as Decker looked to clear the room and he lost track of his partner. The wrapping paper rattled again and as Decker turned them both to face the sound, Bodie reacted to his partner's yelled "Down" and dropped to the floor.  In the same second, both Doyle's and Decker's guns fired.

"Doyle!" Bodie yelled as he scrambled away from the injured Decker, who was lying in a fetal position behind him, disarmed and with a bullet in his shoulder.  "Stop yelling, I'm here" said his partner in an impatient tone, as he finished extricating himself from the discarded wrapping paper. Bodie had never seen him look so good, as Doyle stalked up to Decker, rolled him over and handcuffed him, before handing him over to the squad for treament and to enjoy the hospitality of Cowley and the Ci5 interrogation rooms. Once relieved of his burden, Doyle turned back to Bodie, and his tone turned to concern as he examined the side of Bodie's head where the gun has been repeatedly jabbed.  "Are you OK?", he asked gently.  Bodie winced, "Bit of a headache, but otherwise fine."

Cowley heard the response as he approached them and immediately directed them to return to HQ for Bodie to get checked out and to turn in their reports. Once done, they were free for the next two days.  An offhand "Well done", was thrown over his shoulder, as Cowley returned to the rest of the clean up.

"Things I do for you", said Bodie, "two days off!".  "Things I do for you", responded Doyle,  "it was not easy crawling through all that Christmas paper quietly." Bodie looked a question at him.  "Well how else was I supposed to get close enough to get a good shot at him," Doyle answered.  "Had to make sure you didn't end up with a bullet up your crankcase, or anywhere else for that matter."  He smiled, "I have plans for that fine piece of machinery."

And a Covid New Year

Well, folks,... I have failed. DDDD:

I do blame COVID; the Xmas visitor's Tuesday flight was cancelled, so we had extra company until last night, and I had to catch up with a bunch of things in the last 24 hrs. Not enough time to finish the story I had started earlier in the month.

So, instead, I'm reccing one of my favorite stories. But this isn't just a rec.

It's the holidays, no? And after all the hullabaloo and prep, all the fixings and eatings and celebratings, you visualize a few mins to sit with a cuppa (or mulled cider - or wine - if that works for you), snuggle up before a (virtual) fire, and delve into your favorite Pros stories.

THAT'S what we're talking about. :D

So, pull up with a favorite (at least one of mine, anyway) - Of Tethered Goats and Tigers by Tarot. (It's also posted on AO3, but my original reading was Circuit Archive, sort of like an old, comfortable blanket.)

Doyle and Cowley need to set a trap - but neglected to tell Bodie. And it has one of my best, most favorite fic scene when he finds out... :-D

Enjoy the interlude, and - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I hoped to have a vid to post today, but the idea I had didn't work out, so I made this instead:

Ray Doyle wearing a headband with red and black check reindeer antlers attached.

Merry (fourth day of) Christmas, all.

While drawing a bit of a blank for story ideas, I decided to look up some Christmas story writing prompts.  One of them was 'a gift wrapped with newspaper and duct tape'.  And off I went...

*Post edited to comply with the comm rules.  I'm sorry for my mistake.

Pros School of Creative Giftwrapping, by [livejournal.com profile] ubicaritas9

Story summary: Christmas Eve finds Bodie and Doyle employing some last-minute creative touches to their giftwrapping.

Prologue - Advent

It was a typical December, in that the subversive element of society that liked to plant bombs in large stores and other crowded places made its annual appearance in London, and this year spread their particular type of cheer to places outside the capital as well.

Posting on behalf of [livejournal.com profile] f_m_parkinson again. Some of you might have seen a video called Detachable Penis. Well if you haven't, take a look (it's also here on YouTube), and then read on...*g*

That Detachable Penis
by Felicity M. Parkinson

Two drabbles written for WriteTime 2020 Online in response to the songvid ‘Detachable Penis’, by Sandy, Alex, Gwyn, Tina and Rache.

A detachable penis is handy - until you lose it. I don’t usually take it round with me unless I need it but I managed to leave it somewhere. It wasn’t in the cupboard where I keep it. Searched the whole flat. Phoned friends to see if I’d left it with them after a party. (I got sozzled.) Nothing. Bodie laughed. He was no help at all – kept offering daft suggestions. Finally spotted it on a bric a brac stall at the market and had to buy it back. Relief! Maybe I’ll keep it on more. Bodie would like that.

Conversely:

It’s no joke being a detachable penis. Doyle lost me the other day. Usually he’s a careful sod, keeps me in his cupboard. But he took me to a party, got pissed and showed me to a friend, then forgot to put me back in his trousers. Next morning I was handed over to the market with other lost property. The indignity! Doyle came by the stall, looking concerned. I almost waved at him. And he had to shell out for me. Bodie just grinned. Now I’m safely home, maybe they’ll both take more care about where Doyle puts me.

Old Habits…
by Felicity M. Parkinson

Hunger pangs woke him. He had to eat, keep his body satisfied till breakfast. Three mince pies lay in their packet, untouched despite his earlier depredations.

He slid out from under the duvet. Stood. Listened. The snoring from the bed confirmed that Doyle was still asleep. On bare feet, Bodie moved out into the hallway and along to the kitchen. No need for a light; he knew where everything was.

A midnight feast. He wolfed one mince pie, savoured the second, reached for the third.

“Touch my mince pie,” Doyle growled from immediately behind him, “and you’re a dead man.”
