I've been having a think about what to do with [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj this year, and suddenly remembered years ago when we had some guest challengers through the year. I thought it might be fun to do this again now, if anyone's up for it. *g*

It involves:
- letting me know you want to do it, and being given a month/time period for it to run
- deciding on a challenge,
- either making a banner for it or arranging one somewhere, or asking me to sort one out
- posting the challenge on its opening date, and responding to people who sign up for it (if necessary)
- keeping an eye on the challenge! *g*
- closing it all the day after it ends.

I'll do the technical bits, like adding the banner to the comm etc., and making the tags, and will be here to help if you need anything - otherwise it's over to you (and I shall look forward to joining in... *g*)

The only stipulations are that challenges have to be open to all characters (e.g. no Bodie-only, Doyle-only, B/C-only), and please abide by the comm description and rules from the user-info page, including This is a slash community, although it is gen-friendly.

Would anyone like to have a go? You can volunteer for any time during the year, up to mid-November (when it'll hopefully be time for me to organise the 16th Christmas/winter/solstice/let-there-be-light challenge *g*) Go on - it's good fun, I promise!

[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com

I thought we might have a mini impromptu challenge for a little while - something a bit loose, but something that might help with inspiration or a general desire to write Pros at any moment of the day!

Writers, artists and readers and watchers can all participate - and participate now! As soon as or whenever you see this, come to the comm and either:

a) ask for a prompt, to which you can write a fic/drabble/create art/whatever you like right now (-ish *g*), and then post it

b) post to the comm (or comment here if you're shy) asking for someone else to write/draw/create something specific that you just feel like reading now, or have wanted to see for ages, or have a yen or a lust for...

c) come to the comm and respond to someone's request!

Whichever you choose to do, do it as soon as you can after seeing this challenge/banner/post/etc - it's all about sudden inspiration and instant gratification! It could be a fully-fledged story, or it could be a drabble, a snippet, just a moment in the lads' lives... it could be a work of art, a work in progress, a half-thought-of dream... let's see if we can prompt lots of Pros-y posts on lj over the next week or so!

As ever, the trailer information and posting guidelines are on our user info page - apart from those posting requests, anything Pros-y goes... *g* No deadline for now - just whilst we're waiting for the next challenge to be ready! *g*
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
There's a new Dialj guest challenger coming up in February, but I thought we might start 2011 a little before that, by granting a request to [livejournal.com profile] probodie, who was hoping for a challenge for Valentine's Day... *g* And this year I thought I might combine it with another idea that's been wiggling around, and so we have... the Discovered in Poetry challenge, which also has the advantage of being as pro- or anti- or un- Valentine's Day as anyone might like!

For those who are Valentine's-minded (and perhaps those who are not...) here's a wee history of Valentine's Day - it begins quite promisingly with the Roman Lupercalia, where "young men would strip naked and use goat- or dog-skin whips to spank the backsides..." well, and then it's a fertility thing, but I bet it was occasionally... well, adapted too... *g*

It's an old tradition - and Shakespeare himself brought poetry to it in Ophelia's lament in Hamlet:
To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day,
All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window,
To be your Valentine.

Then "In 1797, the The Young Man’s Valentine Writer is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine's Day card became possible."

But the challenge doesn't have to be about Valentine's Day, though we'll make that our deadline - midnight on the 14th of February 2011 in your time-zone, and if you happen to move to Pago Pago for the duration, then that's fine. *g*

But otherwise it's about the lads and poetry - Alone and palely loitering...... ...to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship.........rage, rage against the dying of the light......The boy stood on the burning deck... *g* Do they read it, do they write it, do they simply live it? What d'you think...?

If you'd like to join in it'd be fab if you commented below to let us know there might be goodies, and if you'd like a prompt then please do comment below and a prompt shall be yours! And if you'd like to sneak quietly into the comm with something poetically-related (whatever it might be - story, vid, art, poem - anything at all!), between now and the challenge deadline, then that would be good too.

Finally - do remember when you're posting to put "trailer information" (see the User Info page) at the end of your post, and under a cut so as not to spoil those who don't need it, and yet be easily found by those who do, and most of all, to enjoy all the thoughts of the lads you'll have while working out your plot!

Would anyone like to play? *g*
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
My flist has been full, this summer, of people off wandering the world and wandering through time as well - visiting castles and stately old houses, old friends and family, going on nostalgic seaside trips and even rediscovering the joys of camping not done since they were kids - and so I thought we might try to capture that love of history in our next challenge - Discovered in Scraps from the Past.

Our lads have had quite colourful histories, both in canon and fanon, not to mention living and working in the ancient and venerable city of London, coming from other places with their own strong pasts, protecting any number of visiting dignitaries from attack in the grand old buildings they insist on holding meetings in, and generally being as involved and tangled with the olden days as we all are. Prosfic written over the last thirty years has even had the lads themselves as Greeks, Romans, Victorians, Edwardians and ages in between, before and after. And of course who knows what tiny scraps of information about the lads' past might come to light in unexpected ways... *g*

Discovered in a Scrap from the Past could be any past - the lads' own, someone else's, the past of a building the villains are lurking in, of their latest case, or the past that is tucked away in Cowley's desk drawer beside his best bottle of twenty year old scotch... It could be the past inspired from one of the twenty pictures around, or the pictures in the challenge banner, or you can request a historically-inspired prompt in the comments below, or just wing it with your own imgination.

If you would like to play then feel free to post any time up until midnight in your own time zone (but no later than midnight in Pago Pago) on 30th September. You can, of course, post as often as you like, too - and it can be anything - challenge responses don't have to be stories, they can be drabbles, poems, pictures, vids, thoughts, wonderings - anything you've been inspired to!

As ever, please use the challenge trailer (at the end of your story and under a cut) which can be found on the user info page - simply cut and paste and fill in the information. If you'd rather include a link to prosficspoilers than specific warning information then that would be fab (the kind people there will provide information for anyone who may want it).

So - would anyone like to play?
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com

Well, it's yet again past our challenge deadline even in Pago Pago, and so we have to pack up the tents and the guy ropes and the lads in general... I'm kicking myself, cos I was over a page into my story (a big thing, for me lately!) when I fell downstairs and put the kaibbosh on finishing it in time... *headdesk* But since I've started I might well finish and post elsewhere - and if anyone else found themselves starting but not finishing, then do feel free to do the same, cos I know I'd still like to read the stories!

Thank you to everyone who responded - writers and readers and all! Don't forget to archive your stories where you will - send them to the lovely archivists at ProsLib (proslib at gmaildotcom), or consider self-archiving to Automated Hatstand. They will of course be "archived" via our User Info page challenge links too, and perhaps, one day, a DialjBound...

And keep an eye out, because there'll be another challenge along shortly... *g* (And as ever, if you've an idea for a challenge, or you fancy guest-hosting one, then do drop me a line and let me know - there are plans afoot for both halloween and our usual Christmas hooley, but if there's a challenge you'd like to see, let us know!)
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
It's been a while since we had a new [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj challenge, but I thought that we should celebrate the longest day of the year (hurrah the shortest day, Southern Hemisphere! *g*) and what better way to do it than off camping with the lads? So, partly inspired by various recent camping photos from [livejournal.com profile] cornishcat and [livejournal.com profile] kiwisue, partly by a reminder from [livejournal.com profile] jaycat92 of LC's answer to an interview question - "I've been camping quite a bit - make of that what you will!" - and partly just by the idea of our two lads together in a very confined space, our new challenge is...

Discovered Whilst Camping

Of course you don't have to put the lads in a tent, as ever make what you will of the challenge theme, but if you would like a camping prompt then please comment below, and if you don't need a specific prompt but might still join in, then it'd still be lovely if you commented below, just to build up our anticipation... *g*

If you would like to join in then feel free to post any time (and anything - challenge responses don't have to be stories, they can be drabbles, poems, pictures, vids, thoughts, wonderings - anything you've been inspired to!) up until midnight in your time zone (and no later than midnight in Pago Pago) on 31st July - and of course post as often as you like, too...

As ever, please use the challenge trailer (at the end of your story and under a cut) which can be found on the user info page - simply cut and paste and fill in the information. If you'd rather include a link to [livejournal.com profile] prosficspoilers than specific warning information then that would be fab (the kind people there will provide information for anyone who may want it).

So... would anyone like to go camping with the lads? *g*
[identity profile] robeau.livejournal.com
Since our mates in Australia are already in the throes of the ides of March (the 15th) we're ready for a new challenge that will run through April 15th (deadline midnight your time or in Pago Pago if you need a few extra minutes) which has a few nightmares associated with it as well, not the least of which is the fact it’s the deadline for filing taxes in the US!

So I’ve dusted, hoovered, polished the family silver, and the Robeau Kitties have been brushed to a soft, silky shine, so we’re ready for whatever comes our way. You see the DiaLj mods, in a weak moment, agreed to turn DiaLj over to me for a turn as guest host! And Byslantedlight was kind enough to lend a helping hand by creating the lovely but rather "it was a dark and scary night" type banner. Totally appropriate for this rather dark challenge I've come up with.

The Challenge )
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
It's finally the 1st of February, and the moon is full, which means that in a fortnight's time, on the 14th of February, millions of people will be out celebrating - not Valentine's Day, but Chinese New Year, the beginning of the Year of the Tiger. This will apparently be a year of adventure, a year of risks - incident, opportunities, change! I thought we might celebrate with them, because the lads would surely have known all about it - they both seem to have eastern interests of one kind or another, and of course they live in London - home to a vibrant Chinatown.

But what would they have been doing - how might they have got caught up in it all, in the excitement and fireworks and bangers and feasts and fortune cookies and lights and lanterns? Who do they know? Where have they been? What are they thinking? Our lads at Chinese New Year...

Chinese New Year celebrations actually continue for fifteen days, culminating in the Festival of Lanterns, so this Discovered in Chinese New Year will run until 28th February - midnight Pago-Pago time, as usual. Feel free to post any time from 14th February until the 28th, to join in the celebrations.

Please comment below to take part - you don't have to, of course, but it's nice to know who might play and what we might have to look forward to. Comment as well if you'd like a prompt to set you on your way and inspire you to creation - as usual stories, art, vids, poetry, thoughts, games, puzzles - any creation at all is welcome!

Don't forget to post fic with trailers rather than headers (format on the User info page), to wear your warm vests, cos it's still cold out there, and to take a handkerchief with you... and have fun!

Would anyone like to light a lantern with us...?
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
So... it's Saturday, the UK is still under a blanket of snow, and I feel like being a wee bit topical... also, I may be trying to hang on to the December magic just a little bit... *g*

I thought maybe a new challenge? Inspired by the lads' world around us right now, and because a couple of people have suggested it...
Discovered in the Snow!

For inspiration - either look outside (*g* - ooh, and perhaps post a photo of your inspiration at the top of your creation?!) or comment below, especially if you're from sunnier climes, and I will prompt you with a picture from the UK in all its 2010 frozen glory! And if you think you might play, then please comment anyway, so we have something to look forward to... *g*

My first thought was let's have until the snow melts - but since this is the UK and we have no clue when that might be, I'd better say that the challenge will run until midnight, Pago-Pago time, next Sunday 17th of January - with a possible extension if we're snowed in... *g*

Stories, artwork, graphics, vids, thoughts, wonderings, games, reviews - anything at all welcome, inspired by the lads and the snow.

So... would anyone like to play?

Oh, I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to! - but I must... This is the final post of the Discovered in a Christmas Stocking Challenge, and hasn't it been brilliant? Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] magenta_blue who did a fab job making a banner and icon that made me giggle whenever I saw it, and to everyone who's participated, who's created, and read and viewed, and commented and just enjoyed it all - Pros is just the best place to be at Christmas time!

I'll link posts to the Calendar above as usual, so that you just have to click on someone's userpic to be taken to their creations and contributions, and the challenge is archived on the User Info page as usual too... And I am planning to catch up with the Dialj Bounds, one of these days... For people who've written fic - don't forget to send your stories to our ProsLib archivist, at proslib at gmaildotcom, and perhaps archive yourself to The Automated Hatstand...

And that must be all for this year... Although there might be another wee challenge along shortly - maybe even very shortly *g* - so do keep your eyes peeled...
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
Ah, le weekend - and even better, le loooong weekend! Three whole days off, one final hurrah before the summer is over and we're meandering gently into autumn...

To celebrate, and to keep us going through September, we are (of course! *g*) offering a challenge - we'd like you to tell us your version of what the lads might get up to on the August Bank Holiday.

Of course there's a twist - we'd like to know what they get up to on the Bank Holiday, but just on the Bank Holiday - from midnight Monday morning to midnight Monday night, Bank Holiday Monday only... Just one day in the life of the lads...

Of course a lot can happen in 24 hours...

There are prompts for anyone who'd like one - if you would, then please comment below - and if you'd like to take part without a prompt, well as always that's fine too, though it would be nice to hear from you as well so we know what we might be looking forward to!

Posting for the challenge opens right now and closes at midnight on 30th September 2009 - somewhere in the world... *g*

Trailer and Archiving Reminder )
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
It's Friday 7th August, and the Ashes are being played out at Headingley this weekend. I'm reading the commentary here and I think England is in to bat (and that we're missing Freddie Flintoff this match for some reason...) but it's a little hard to tell because... well, check out the commentary page and you'll perhaps see what I mean. So...

...I thought it might be fun to use prompts from the commentary today, because honestly, they could mean anything. For example:

Right, it's Jerusalem, and here come the players. - B/D are sent to pick up a villain who's been hiding out as set designer in a professional theatre company.

Siddle shares the new cherry with Hilfenhaus, and here's Cook on strike... - Siddle and Hilfenhaus are in charge of training new boys, Bodie and Doyle...

No need to worry folks, here comes KP... hang on a minute... come on Belly, now's your time. He gets a poor leg-side full-toss first up and sees out the over. - Bodie's shirt has been torn away, revealing his tummy, which Doyle... no, I'm just gonna leave the rest of that to your imaginations... *g*

So... If you think you might manage a bizarre-commentary inspired ficlet, drabble, or... well, anything really, comment below and I will give you a random snatch of commentary from this weekend's test match... There are runs in it for anyone who participates, all counting towards the ultimate ProsTestFic trophy prize, awarded at the end of the series... *g*

Posting anytime you like, as long as it's by midnight Tuesday 11th in your timezone (or Pago Pago, as always). As always, feel free to claim a prompt just in case you might manage it, and feel free to claim and post as often as you like!

Anyone fancy the game? *g*
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
It's still summer here, and we've had holidays, we've had weddings, and it's finally time for those immortal words...

We welcome World Service listeners to the Oval, where the bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey. (Try reading it out loud for that heeee moment... *g*)

Yes - the sport of gentlemen (and Bodie) - cricket!

We thought we'd try something a wee bit different for this challenge too - something fast-paced, hard-hitting (no, it is based on cricket, really...), that will work best if lots of people join in... a Prosfic Test Match series!

I know, I know - the Ashes are half over - third test started today at Edgbaston... but that's okay, we shall take it one match at a time, and see if there's a winner by the end of the series. (Don't worry, you don't actually have to write about cricket - unless of course you want to imagine the lads in their cricket whites, with that long mark where they've been rubbing their balls on their trousers... *g*)

How to Play the Game )
[identity profile] empty-mirrors.livejournal.com
It's February, and technically the world is waking up after the long dark, the sun is sliding higher in the sky, the cold is receding a little, and there is promise of better things to come. Well, except in the southern hemisphere. Or the tropics. Okay, it's complicated… But the point is – it's time for another [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj challenge: Discovered In Temptation.

Today is 21st February, the start of the season of Lent – 40 days of fasting and denial. (Actually, turns out that it's 46 days, because they don't count Sundays - did everyone else already know that? I always was told 40! Bit of a swizz that…) Quite honestly we couldn't see either of the lads going much for the denial thing, so we decided that 46 days of temptation would be far more Pros-like.

Here then is your challenge:

Comment below to choose a week from the challenge calendar below in which you would like to post your creation, and you will be assigned one of the Seven Deadly Sins through which to tempt the lads: Luxuria (lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (avarice), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath), Invidia (envy) or Superbia (hubris).

Your icon will be placed in the week that you have chosen, and that's the week that you should post. As ever it's all flexible, let us know if you have a problem, and we'll fiddle appropriately! The calendar/icons are just to remind people when they're posting, and to let readers see what's to come in the week ahead.

Rather than give people specific days, we rather slothfully thought that having the flexibility of a week might be nice this time, and so you are free to post on any day in the week that you have chosen. Posts aren't limited to one person a day either, so in theory everyone could choose the final week of Lent, but it'd be nice if you checked the calendar-so-far and tried to help out in spacing offerings as evenly-ish as we can!

[livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj is focused on Pros fic, of course, but as ever vids and artwork are also welcome. Feel free to request a temptation at any time in the 46 days, and if you complete one then of course you can have another one!

Welcome to the next DiaLJ challenge. This time we're going for something a little bit different…

A Round Robin.

To those of you not in the know, a Round Robin is basically a joint story writing enterprise. In a few moments, I will post the first paragraph of, what I hope will prove to be, a communal magnum opus. *g*

Your task will then be to contribute, moving the story along to what generally turns out to be an unlikely and ridiculous conclusion.

Rules are this….

1. Only one section at a time, please, posted as a comment under the original post with one section equalling approx. 200 words. Less is fine, more could be problematic. Remember we're going for frequent changes here, not one person trying to complete the entire tale.

2. It might be that you post your 200 words just as someone else does, but to avoid it getting confusing all we can say is - hard luck. Please delete your contribution and try again with another section, otherwise it'll get confusing.

3. To that end, please *please* check where the story has got to before you contribute and follow on from the last comment/section written.

4. Please no story hogging! Only one contribution per person in a row!

5. The mod - that's me *g* - has the final say in the event of any confusion or problems.

This challenge will run until the 2nd of February, however if the first story stalls out, one of the mods will begin another. And if it proves popular, we can run it for a little longer.

Sound like fun? Then get your writing hats on, cos here it comes….

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot…

Sounds pretty much exactly like a day in the life of CI5 if you ask me… and thus the next dialj challenge – Discovered In A Sky Rocket.

There are two possible parts to this challenge!

Either:

Once more, post-as-you-please-on-the-day of the challenge, any creation based around Guy Fawkes Night (and I know there is some fic out there – yeay!)

or:

Firework Drabble Challenge
If you fancy something more in the way of inspiration, request a prompt below and you will be given the name of a firework/s on which to base a drabble/s (or fic, if you feel so inclined)! Eg. Golden Lion or Giddy Aunties In A Spin (no, it’s an actual firework *g*). We thought it might be nice to have some little bursts of Pros, especially since there isn't much time between Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night...

As usual, please sign up by commenting below if you’d like to take part (although we certainly won’t reject surprise last-minute contributions either!)

I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot…

It is October... England is swathed in gales, the nights get ever-darker... and somewhere on All Hallow's Eve, the lads...

Tis time for a new challenge - Discovered On All Hallows Eve! This is another nice, simple one - scare the lads! Let them endure some form of spookiness (or halloween silliness, since it's them!) and then post your fic, drabble, icons, art, poetry, ramblings, other! sometime on the 31st October.

For a touch of inspiration:
Woodlands Jnr School
Wychwood
Scotsman
Auntie Beeb
and erm... our new banner!

If you think you might like to join in, please sign up below!
