I thought I would be very busy in the morning so I decided to post my (first) contribution just after midnight and made it very simple. But my appointment has been cancelled, so I now can do something more refined. Though I am afraid I have to keep with my little playful programs for posting pictures from your own computer is not possible with a free account (or is it now? Everybody seems to post personal pictures but me).
You can totally post pictures from your own computer with a free account! You should see a button in your posting window that looks basically like this one: (http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/byslantedlight/8284114/2509842/2509842_original.jpg) Just click it, and then follow the directions - you upload the pictures from your computer to your lj scrapbook (see your lj menus to find this at other times), and when you do it using that button it also puts them into the post you're working on. Let me know if that doesn't work, and I'll post some more detailled instructions. *g*
(And hurrah for refined things to be done this morning - hurrah for any more Pros-y treats! *g*)
(ETA - and sorry for the first accidental comment, I was doing something extra clever with the picture I posted to show you the button, and messed it up! *headdesk*) (ETA again - rats, there's still something odd with it. You should be able to click on it and see it full size though, so that you can find my arrow to the button!)
Oh bum - they've changed that since I had a basic free account (granted that was way back in 2005... *g*) If you upgraded (for free) to a Plus account you could post pictures, but then you'd have to put up with advertisements, which you probably don't want to do...
Another way to do it would be to open a free Flickr or Photobucket or Picasa something like that photo account, then you could use it to post pictures to lj (you just cut and paste the code - I think that should work...)
PS - if you got notification of a strange spam comment, don't worry, I deleted and reported it!
Eventually I had a try and the preview seems to show that posting pictures is indeed possible with my account. Unbelievable! How many times had I done just that for years to no avail? There must have been a change at some point, which I haven't noticed. Thanks for informing me about it. Now I must try for good, beyond the preview.
As you supposed, I really don't like the advertisements (anywhere); I am what we call in French a "publiphobe".
