Don't cha know an author's role is to lead his hapless characters into the jungle, get them lost, make them fall into a pit, and then throw stones at them while they're down there? At least, that's what the author of the first dozen (or so) Hardy Boy books said. And I believe him!
(He was also a big fan of lengthy descriptions of meals and the food consumed, most of which was cut out of the modern versions of his books.)
