That's great that you felt some measure of sympathy for Cowley! It's not that I dislike him, so much as that I find it hard to like him - I can recognise that the job he has to do is very hard, very emotionally demanding and unforgiving, and can see how feelings would have to be subjugated to the demands of duty. I find it fascinating, in fact, which is why I wanted to try this perspective (and I think I was slightly influenced by fanfic that has Bodie as being somehow Cowley's "favourite", so although I wasn't specific, I had the feeling when I was writing this that part of Cowley's envy was not just that Doyle had made it back from severe injury, but that Bodie as Bodie, as opposed to anyone else, was so wholly committed to getting him back on track.) I do see Cowley as very moral within the confines of the job that he has to do, which inevitably will on occasion require him to compromise that morality.
