Heee! I just guessed that reference to the oxtail soup was a real memory. And I've been sitting here telling myself firmly that I couldn't possibly justify going off and making toffee tonight just for me and hubby, especially as he doesn't like it!
And. yes, you're right, Bonfire Night has changed beyond recognition in recent years. I loved the bit in your story, though, about Bodie being "easily press-ganged into sparkler duties. They all spelt names in the air before the boys rushed off" - can just see that happening even now!
I think the biggest change for me about Bonfire night is the weather - I'm sure that we used to have to dress up with scarves, hats, boots and gloves and even then got frozen feet - these days, you barely seem to need a coat. But I do live in the South West so maybe it's colder further north where I grew up.
