I think this is lovely. It seems very realistic to me (and not a sign of inherent "bad-temperedness" or something) that Doyle would lash out when he's feeling most insecure and vulnerable - I love his slightly fumbling but sincere efforts at apology - bringing Bodie the scarf ...
And Bodie didn't strike me as at all overly patient; as you say, hard-won restraint, because he understands what Doyle's going through - perhaps on some level even better than Doyle does - and because he thinks it's worth it. Well, he starts to doubt that, but then Doyle shows him again why it is that he's stuck with him all this time!
As usual, so many beautiful lines (one of my very favorites is the one msmoat quoted, so I won't quote it again), and you are so good at creating the mood, at making me *feel* .... really gorgeous; great job
(Though ... of course I'm dying to see that "vibe" realized ;-)
