This is wonderful -- I can't help thinking (and giggling) about the poem's title in light of your story. This is so much like that, layers upon layers meaning, except in this case, I am sure that the center will hold, that they will hold.
I have to agree with the person who cited the "I don't trust *that*" line; it's perfect.
