Well, when I moved to Canada in 1980, we had our choice of black or red licorice (yeah, the spelling's a little different). By 1990, however, you'd be hard pressed to find black licorice sold anywhere. I think you can get it in specialty candy stores, but that's about it.

It's a pity, because I always prefered licorice-flavored black licorice, over the cherry-flavored red liquorice (which actually has no licorice in it at all). If you took them outdoors in the winter, they'd freeze and get really hard and chewy. Yum!

Red liquorice is only good for using as a straw when you drink gingerale.
