Questions relating to quotes from fiction
15. Which stories do the following quotes come from?
a) Two hours later, well into the still watches of the night, they were still reading. The study was absolutely silent, except for their murmurs of delight, and the odd "here, this one's good." Their fingers brushed as they exchanged stories, and their heads were bent together over their unexpected treasure-trove. Doyle's curls brushed against Bodie's short crop, and tickled his ears. Bodie leaned a companionable arm on Doyle as his attention was drawn to a particularly good passage. Their breath commingled, expelled from their lungs in the same companionable rhythm, marking out the cadences of the prose. They were cocooned together in silence, rapt in the glow of a heaven made out of words and lamplight.
Dog Eat Dog: Dog Rose
b) Heart slamming against his chest, he took the last step just as Cowley's hand touched the car door. Shock registered on the older man's face, but it was too late.
The sensation of victory filled him as a vision of Cowley already dead on the ground flashed before his eyes. Then the door to the back room of his mind opened onto hell. It compelled him to step into the light, flip the Browning around his trigger finger and offer it, butt first, to George Cowley.
"Name's Bodie," he said, "I want to work for you."
Whisper of a Kill: Lois Welling
c) Later, much later, after he had been forced to acknowledge time and again the power this one man had gained over him, he began to see that the knife cut both ways--or rather, the metaphorical leash Bodie had locked around his throat was as firmly buckled about Bodie's own neck. And deep in his head, something angry, hurting and vindictive, resenting the role chosen for him, promised a revenge. Two could play at that game, and if Bodie hadn't realised it yet, he would soon enough.
Consequences: Tarot & A.N.Other
d) Bodie's rouged and embellished face stared into his, oddly enough not unattractive, a very handsome woman, you might say. Twin fluorescent earrings in the shape of cherries dangled beneath his ears; his pale skin was gilded with cosmetics. Yet looking out at Doyle from this stranger's face were the eyes of the man he knew better than anyone. Bizarre. He didn't know if he liked the way it made him feel, but it was better than other things waiting in the wings for him to feel. Exciting, in a way. Rather wicked.
Pantomine: Sebastian
e) When the world exploded around him.
What the. . . Without conscious thought, Ray dropped to his knees, taking cover under the rack of clothing, as the building shook and lights shattered, spraying glass. Bits of plaster rained down; he choked as dust clogged the air. Over the ringing in his ears, several women screamed, high-pitched, quavering, and a man shouted, sounding as if he were in pain. Once the debris stopped falling, Ray scrambled to his feet and quickly surveyed the damage, wiping grit from his face. His hand shook a little from the familiar surge of adrenaline. The building appeared structurally sound, but he waited a moment, in case there was another explosion – a gas pipe? Something more sinister? – then headed to the doors.
And Close The Path: Sihaya Black

kiwisue with 27/35 - hurrah! And hurrah to everyone else who took part (though it was very quiet out there this year... hmmmn!)..! Mostly I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves, because that's what the quiz is really about - not whether people score highly or not, but whether they're jumping up and down waving their arms about because they know the answer, and whether it's on the tip of their earlobes, if only they could just think of it... *g*
And finally - a huge thank you to our fabulous
shooting2kill for putting this together, which is never easy, but creates lots of fun even for people who don't post their answers (like me, being all mod-ish and honest with the screened answers...) Next time I think I'll play anyway... *g*
