A Cottage Holiday
by Macklingirl

They had really had a horrible two weeks. Lots of running, little sleep. So little sleep that Bodie had even fallen asleep in the middle of a debriefing with Cowley. But it was only when Freddy from the HQ garage informed Cowley that the lads had ditched their Capris and taken a taxi home that Cowley asked Miss Walsh for advice.

And she had a wonderful idea about what to do with these tired lads. "Well George", she said. "you know I have this little quiet cottage in the forest on the Greek coast. Give them a week there. They've earned it." Mr Cowley beamed at her words. "Wonderful idea, Elizabeth. This will be a surprise for them. And afterwards, they will be better than ever."

So, when they left the building young Sherman Banks called after them. "Bodie, Doyle. Wait a minute. I have something from Mr Cowley for you!"

They turned around and leaned wearily against the counter. "What is it?" Bodie yawned.

New Year 2023-border

Happy New Year everyone - here's to a much improved 2023 for the whole world, and to our lads always.

I thought this could be another everyone-post-if-they'd-like-to day, because last year that worked really well on Christmas day, but it seems to have quietened down even more this year, so I shall send this invitation with crossed fingers and held thumbs, because it would be lovely to start 2023 as we mean to go on - with lots of Pros posts! *g*

But maybe I shall also ask some New Year questions too - you could reply here, or you could make a post to the comm yourself in reply!

What would you like to see the lads doing this year?
What kind of Prosfic would you like Pros writers to write this year?
If someone was to find a lost Pros episode in 2023, what and who would you desperately like to see in it?
Tell us your Pros desires and wishes for 2023! *vbg*

Eep for almost running out of time before posting today, but I hope you'll forgive me when I tell you why... One of my absolutely favourite Pros stories is now online! Wheee!

Glen Fiddich was a British Pros writer who wrote her first hatstand in 1983. Some of her stories are available on the ProsLib disk, but my very favourite, a story which I re-read at least once a year - and honestly, more like four or five times a year - is Island Innocents. The lads are sent to the Isles of Scilly to keep an eye out for suspicious activity, and the story unfolds as both a fab case story, and also a beautifully gentle view of the lads' new relationship. It feels like summer, and like being hugged, and it's just perfect.

Sadly Glen Fiddich died a number of years ago, but her close friends agreed that she would be happy for her stories to be posted to AO3, and it's with their blessing that there is now an AO3 for Glen Fiddich's stories.

And the very first story to be posted, is my blissful favourite:

Island Innocents

It's novel-length, and its charmingly illustrated, and I can't say anything more than - please, please read it!

Boxing Day is one of those almost-days, where there's almost nothing that actually has to be done if you're lucky enough to be on holiday to start with. The perfect day for messing around with wordgames and puzzles, right...? *g* Here are some from the Pros annuals, and if anyone else has puzzles or wordgames or the like to share, then please feel free to join in with me and post them today!

These ones are made for printing out - and you can of course click through to make them bigger, too. *g*

And just because we need something fun to look at too - here's our lads playing a different sort of game - from the 1984 annual. *g*

...with a reminder for everyone who posts to the comm.

For some reason I'm having to remind more and more people individually after they post this year, so I'm pinching a bit of Krisser's day to try and save time by reminding everyone at once.

Please post your story information as a trailer, not a header, and put it under the cut!

If your story is only short and doesn't need a cut, then please make a special one for the trailer so that it can't be seen.

(Please don't try and use fancy spoiler cuts that make words invisible until highlighted, because they only work if someone's lj has a white background on all pages - I can still see them on mine, for instance, because my background is blue/grey).

We've had this policy at Dialj since the comm began, about seventeen years ago, and we've been through multiple explanations and hassles about it over the years, but our original reasons for doing it still stand - and they're over on the User Info page, where they've always been, but I'll copy them here again for clarity.

1. Please include the following "trailer" to help with archiving at the end of your post (rather than as a header at the beginning):
Title:
Author:
Slash or Gen:
Archive at ProsLib/Circuit:
Author's Name for Archiving (if different to above):
Disclaimer:
Notes: (including warnings if you really wish to - these are not compulsory. Readers note: these will be included at the end of a story so as not to spoiler it for people who prefer their fic unadulterated!)

We use "trailers" rather than "headers" for a very specific reason. There's a long history in Pros of fans preferring not to be spoiled for a story by being warned ahead of time what is going to happen. If warnings etc are at the top of a story, then readers have no choice but to see them and be spoiled - but if we put them at the end of a story, readers have a choice: they can scroll quickly to the bottom of the post and find out whether there's anything to which they might be sensitive, or they can just read happily, and without being spoilered, from the top of the story. Please respect this compromise!

(I'm also aware that I might have inadvertantly encouraged people to forget to hide their trailers by forgetting to add an lj-cut when I posted Felicity M. Parkinson's story - but please don't do as I do, do as the comm says! (Especially since it also says "trailer"!) And also feel free to come in and kick me if I ever forget something myself *g*!)

Happy Winter Solstice! And of course summer solstice, for some people. *g*

For the third year in a row I've not managed to finish my Big Story Project, but I can at least offer a littler Pros fic for you - one with the promise of sunshine to come!

The Loaded Gun
by Slantedlight

“You know, we could have been anyone,” Doyle said, gazing around them. “Insurance salesmen, brain surgeons…”

“Deep sea divers?” Bodie was too comfortable to move, the sand just right under his towel, arms stretched up and head cradled perfectly on his hands, the Spanish sun on his face as hot as it had ever been in Africa, but he opened his eyes and squinted up. The expanse of Doyle’s naked back stretched beside him, already tinged a warm old-gold. He was still sitting up, feet planted firmly apart, arms loosely clasped around bent knees, scanning the ranks of other holiday-makers splayed on the beach around them. Not just nosiness, Bodie thought, Doyle still hadn’t relaxed into their two weeks away yet, was still a little tense at the idea of not having his shooter with him in case they might need it. A little tense at the idea of what that shooter could do.

No guns through Heathrow this time... )

My last post of the day is a piece of art and my sincere wish for a bright, festive holiday season and a very Happy New Year for you all. Happy Holidays!!

Welcome to Part 2 of my “Bodie/Doyle Christmas Snapshots”, a collection of random little scenes that popped into my head when I was thinking about the lads and the holidays. They’re not connected in any way and can take place at any point in Bodie and Doyle’s lives together. I leave it up to you to create a bigger story around the snippets for yourself! Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

OUR FIRST CHRISTMAS

Ray popped the last piece of fish in his mouth, gave his malt vinegar-covered fingers a lick, then swiped his hand across his denims. Bodie, walking down the high street next to him, finished off the last chip with relish, then wadded up the empty, greasy newspaper and deposited it in the bin on the pavement.

It was a cold, crisp, but sunshine-filled afternoon in London. With only four days until Christmas, the shops were busy and the pavement bustling with people still searching out that perfect pressie.

More holiday goodness this way! )

SNOWBALL FIGHT

Bodie took a last drink of his hot cocoa and set his empty mug down. “It’s stopped snowing. What say we have a go at getting those lights up outside?” he said as he stood with a smile.

Ray gave his partner a chipped-toothed grin. “You’re climbing the ladder this year.”

Both of them dressed warmly a few minutes later, Bodie took the big box of lights outside while Ray headed to the outbuilding to fetch a ladder.  Ladder in hand, Ray rejoined his partner at the front of the house, where Bodie was trying, and failing, to untangle a large string of lights.

“What the devil are you doing?” Ray chuckled, his breath crystalizing in front of him.

“Apparently making things worse,” Bodie grinned. “C’mon, give us a hand.”

Summary: How did two drunk men catching snowflakes on their tongues lead to declarations of love? Blame it on the whisky. And the Christmas wish.

Raymond Doyle was filled to the brim with the holiday spirit. And copious amounts of the liquid variety as well.

Beside him in the cramped backseat of the taxi was his partner, grinning like the drunk, silly sod he was, in the aftermath of another raucous CI5 Christmas party. Having indulged in their fair share of libations, they were at the point in the evening where everything was funny. Ray had no doubt the cabbie would be glad to see the backsides of them and their drunken laughter sooner rather than later.

And Nothing Else Matters
by Felicity M. Parkinson

It was that dead week in between Christmas and New Year, the time that Bodie regarded as ‘the dog days’, having moved them on from summer by some four months. Several Christmas cards still adorned the bookshelves of the living room – one from Cowley, another from Jax and his wife, a third from Murphy, and one from a gun shop that he patronised on occasion. They all looked a little wilted now that the immediacy of three days of Christmas excess had passed. Even the mistletoe that he had hung so thoughtfully from the kitchen light had shrivelled a little.

They were in a week with a festival at each end, a bit like bookends, he thought, and not a lot in between except to recover from one in order to celebrate the other with equal or even greater fervour.

Not that he'd had the chance... )

Everyone thought it would be a nice idea when Betty asked Cowley if she could decorate the rooms with little snowglobes. They were so cute and nice to the eyes.

But look under the cut to see what she really had up her sleeves.

I hope you enjoyed my little silliness and wish you all a wonderful and peaceful Christmas time.
