“Come on, Doyle. It'll be fun – and it'll give us both something to unwrap on Christmas morning.”
“Yeah, all right.” Doyle looked away, not wanting Bodie to realize that he'd already been planning on buying him a gift.
Bodie watches Doyle walk down the street, stopping to peer into shop windows from time to time, curious as to what his partner was going to buy him.
'Bloody Bodie. Thinks I can't see him sitting there, watching me, waiting to see what I get him. Two can play at that game, sunshine.'
“He's never buying me a bloody camera, is he?” Bodie pouted.
“If I borrow Mum's car, it'll make it more difficult for Bodie to follow me.”
“Clever, Doyle. Wouldn't have noticed you if you hadn't been wearing those jeans!”
Bodie sneaks up on the shop Doyle has disappeared into.
Doyle: “Holds ten rounds, fast reload, and automatic cocking? Sounds good.”
Bodie: 'Sounds bloody brilliant to me. I've wanted one of those for ages.'
“Bloody Bodie! I'm going to have to do something about this.”
“Morning, Murph. Got a favour to ask.”
“I'll pay you twenty quid to keep Bodie distracted for the day.”
“Doyle's given me fifty quid to keep you distracted. How much are you willing to pay me to not distract you?”
“Fifty quid! You're having me on. Doyle wouldn't ever voluntarily give you that much.”
“Yeah, all right, it was twenty.”
“I'll match that.”
“I can tell you where he was headed.”
“Twenty-five.”
“Deal.”
“You're a lying shit, Murph. Doyle's nowhere around here. Maybe he did give Murph fifty quid.”
“I think maybe flowers was a stupid idea. I'll give 'em to Mum, she'll appreciate them.”
“I'm looking for a golly. Got a chipped tooth and a dodgy cheekbone – wears tight jeans...”
“He's not been in here – I would have remembered tight jeans.”
“I'm getting that twenty quid back from Murph. He's useless at distracting Bodie – probably tried to take him to a girly show.”
“I'll hide it in his gym bag. He never looks in there.”
“I've been all over the city and it's almost Christmas. Give me my sodding present, Doyle!”
“You don't get presents until Christmas Eve, Bodie.”
“I'll give you yours if you give me mine.”
“Then we still won't have anything to put under the tree.”
“Uh, yours won't fit under the tree anyhow.”
“What? What did you get me – a house in the country?”
“Not quite. Come on, I'll show you.”
“How's this then?”
“Bloody hell. What'd you do, rob a bank?”
“Won it in a poker game. So, where's mine?”
“Well, it's not here.”
“That's not a gun!”
“Who said I was getting you a gun?”
“I thought...”
Doyle laughs
“Go on then, open it.”
“'Dear Mr Doyle, we're happy to confirm your reservation of the honeymoon cottage for the week of February 10 through 16. May we take this opportunity to congratulate you on your upcoming nuptials and wish you and your wife an enjoyable stay...' This is your idea of a gift? Telling me you're getting married in February?”
“Bodie! You moron. It's for us! I couldn't very well tell them I wanted to rent the place to have a dirty week away with my partner, who also happens to be male, now could I?”
Bodie grins. “You going to carry me over the threshhold too?”
Doyle lets his gaze roam over Bodie, licking his lips appreciatively. “The size of you? Not bloody likely, sunshine.”
Bodie tucks the reservation confirmation away. “February's a long way away still. How about if we check out the bed in your new boat?”
“I like the way you think.”
