Nothing like waiting almost until the end of the challenge to post, right? *g* Just a little ficlet for fun.

Bodie rummaged through Doyle’s drawer, trying to find two socks that matched. He didn’t know why Doyle didn’t pair up his socks after doing laundry – maybe that explained why he was always running late in the mornings.

Piling the odd socks on top of the dresser, Bodie wondered if it’d be simpler to just dump the drawer out on Doyle’s bed. He paused when his hand encountered a hard, flat square at the back of the drawer. Pulling it out, he discovered it was a small notebook.

Turning it over in his hand, Bodie frowned. It was an odd place to keep a notebook. Unless… He looked at the book in his hand. It didn’t look like it had even been opened, never mind used. He shouldn’t look – but he knew that’s exactly why he would.

He’d been feeling for a while now that Doyle was hiding something from him. He was just acting far too bizarre – one minute friendly and almost hanging on him, and the next, standoffish and abrupt, like he couldn’t wait to get away. Maybe, if the book was hidden at the back of his sock drawer, maybe Doyle had left some sort of clue in the pages. Before a twinge of conscience could get the better of him, Bodie opened the cover of the book and flipped through several blank pages before he came to one with writing on it.

’Anna – very pretty – hasn’t a clue what’s going on. Michael – something wrong there. Didn’t like the Burke and Hare reference – why?

Bodie’d have his measure in about thirty seconds. What do I do about Bodie? It could never work, even though I know about— Don’t go down that path— he’s only for the birds now.

Batak – something off there. Didn’t look like an excited reunion – family strife? Wish Cowley didn’t have us working different angles – could stand to talk it over with Bodie.’

One eyebrow raised in surprise, Bodie flicked a few more pages before he encountered more writing.

’Wonder if I should ask to be repartnered? But I couldn’t do that to Bodie and I don’t want to be repartnered. It’s not HIS fault I had to be stupid enough to fall for him. He’d probably laugh himself sick if he ever found out – either that or belt hell out of me.’

Another page.

’I swear to god, if he puts his hand on my arse one more time – wish I knew what to do, maybe I WOULD jump him then. Want something more than hands and mouths with Bodie – just don’t know who’d be doing what – might have to wrestle for it. He’d fight dirty. Maybe I should let him have a go first so he could show me what to do. If I know what it feels like, I’ll know how to make it good. Says the man too cowardly to even attempt a kiss. I disgust me sometimes. Can’t even muster up the bottle to try it on. I just don’t want to lose what we have. I know what he’d say right now – ‘Doyle, you’re thinking too much’ and he’d be right, but I can’t seem to stop thinking about it, wondering how it would feel... ’

Bodie snickered. He could definitely see Doyle making a move, and then not knowing what to do with it once he’d got his man. And Doyle most definitely would have his man if he’d ever made a move. He turned another page.

’I’m going to kill that bastard if he ever does that again. He went charging in, without any warning at all, drawing fire. I think my heart stopped when I saw him fall, but the stupid bugger only tripped over a cable. I don’t know how much longer I can go through days like today, and then have to watch him head off to spend the night with some bird. All I want to do is hang onto him and reassure myself that he’s still breathing.’

“You dumb bugger,” Bodie said softly. “I went home alone and got drunk. The only reason I was still alive was because I fell and the bullet missed me. I couldn’t tell you that, though. I remember how you grabbed me after the Myer-Helmut mess. Didn’t want to put you through that again, sunshine.”

Bodie turned a few more pages, but it didn’t appear there was any more writing in the notebook even though the last entry had to have been made over a month ago. He closed the book and carefully replaced it where he’d found it, dumping the loose socks into the drawer to cover it. He grabbed two socks at random and stuffed them into the case he was packing. If they didn’t match, well, Doyle would be wearing his boots so it wouldn’t really matter.

He closed the case and picked it up. Time to go and set his dozy partner straight on a few things, although perhaps straight wasn’t quite the word. Bodie snickered as he left Doyle’s flat, confident that when he delivered more than the requested clean clothes to travel home from hospital in, Doyle wouldn’t refuse.

“Here’s to John Hare and his notebook,” Bodie said as he started the car. “I’ll have to see if Doyle still has those glasses hanging about – he was dead sexy in them.”

Very nice! I like the line about setting Doyle 'straight'! And Bodie 'looking' at the book precisely because he shouldn't! Thanks for an enjoyable read!

I thought about this challenge (and didn't get anywhere) and completely forgot about Doyle the reporter. Well thought-of!

Like the fact that the first thing he thinks to record about Anna is "very pretty". Mind on the job as ever :)
