Hi everyone.

I endeavoured to write a long fic for this challenge. I did my very best to finish it, but real life took over and I just couldn't manage it. I tried to think of something short to write instead, but I couldn't think of anything. So I went ahead and put the 'story so far' up on AO3 (it's too long to post in here), just so I'd be contributing something on the right day. I expect to have the whole thing completed in the next few days, but there is quite a bit there already, so I hope a few of you will dip your toes in. I'm just sorry I couldn't give you more -- but I will let you know when it's done. :)

Link to Chapters 1-10 (of about 17) of "The Schoolmaster": a fun Bodie/Doyle fic based on Jane Eyre.

Title: The Schoolmaster
Author: Maddalia
Gen/Slash: slash
Disclaimer: I don't own these things, I just play with them in dastardly ways.
Notes: Thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] moonlightmead for her encouragement in the brainstorming and early scribbling stages of this story, and for swapping challenge days with me!
Archive at ProsLib/Circuit: Yes, eventually!

I went to the school the Bronte sisters went to and guess what was shoved down our throats?

Wow, really? Must have been a few mixed emotions there - she modelled Lowood on it, didn't she?

Yes. Lowood House was actually a 'sister' school, quite nearby, for servant girls. It was at Cowan Bridge and the main school was at Casterton. She took nost of the names from real life. When I was in Bronte House (the junior school for 8-11s) we had two 'houses' - Lowood and Cowan. I was in Lowood. Almost every day we passed the church and the churchyard where the Bronte girls who died in the typhoid epidemic were buried. I could go on and on...
And btw I have also visited the house on Dominica where Jean Rhys based her prequel/official 'fanfic'.

I could go on and on... - Feel free! (she says, hijacking the thread, whoops)

Wide Sargasso Sea! Wow. I am curious now: is the island really so lushly oppressive as she portrays it? I practically have to mop my brow just reading it.

That book is also one of two examples I use when trying to explain (defend, justify) slash and or fanfic in general. Not to defend the 'they're having it away, no, look at them' aspect of slash; but rather the 'using other people's characters has a long literary history behind it' element.
