Doyle stumbled into the ready room and dropped bonelessly onto the couch, lacking the energy to lift his feet up and rest them on the coffee table. Following him into the room, Bodie continued his shuffling progress to the counter between the lounge area and the kitchenette.

“It won’t help.”

“What?”

“Coffee.” Doyle leaned his head against the back of the couch and closed his eyes. “Unless there’s a way to inject the caffeine straight into your veins, it’s not going to help at all.”

Bodie stared into the mug he had sitting on the counter and then the jar of coffee in his hand. He let the spoon drop into the jar and set the jar on the counter, abandoning his attempt to keep himself alert with more caffeine.

He trudged over to the couch and flopped down beside his partner, glancing tiredly around the room. “Who the hell had the energy to put a Christmas tree up?”

Doyle opened one eye and turned his head slightly so he could see the tree set up in the corner. An assortment of coloured balls hung from the branches and it was festooned with tinsel and fairy lights. An angel with a dirty skirt and battered wings looked down from the top. “Probably McCabe,” he muttered. “He’s still on light duties.”

Propping his feet on the coffee table, Bodie just sighed wearily in response.

“Yeah,” Doyle agreed. “With a bit of luck, the Irish will all sit down for tea and give us a chance to have a couple of hours sleep.”

“It’s Christmas, would be a nice gift.”

Silence fell in the room as the two agents drifted into a light doze, their bodies too exhausted to stay completely awake any longer. It had been a tough two weeks in the lead up to Christmas as they combatted the wave of IRA bombings and attempted bombings. Sleep had been in very short supply and if they’d added up their down time, they would have been very surprised to find they’d managed to accomplish all they had on a mere twenty hours of rest.

They’d reached the end of their endurance now, though. If there were another threat to be taken care of, someone else was going to have to deal with it, at least for the next two hours.

Doyle shifted slightly, leaning his head on Bodie’s shoulder and snuggling against his side. Even his hair felt tired. A tiny smile curved his lips briefly when Bodie’s arm wrapped around him protectively.

If there had been anyone awake to look out the ready room window, they would have seen that it was beginning to snow, fat flakes drifting down from a leaden sky to rest on the pavement before swirling across the surface in the light wind.

The angel looked down from her perch at the two exhausted men curled together on the couch. It couldn’t possibly be comfortable to sleep that way, but it seemed the men were tired enough that nothing would keep them awake.

The fairy lights twinkled brightly as the angel concentrated on the sleeping agents. They worked hard all year, making sacrifices, never asking for concessions, focused on doing what had to be done to accomplish the tasks they were set. The request for a gift, murmured from exhaustion-heavy lips, wasn’t a big one and the angel felt they deserved more.

The lights on the tree brightened, bathing the ready room in a warm golden glow. The men on the couch settled in, their bodies relaxing even more as they drifted deeper into sleep. The glow that filled the room extended further, gleaming out past the confines of the building, across the city of London as she lay slumbering beneath her fragile lace gown of snow.

From her perch at the top of the tree the angel smiled benevolently down upon the sleeping men. There would be peace in London for the next twenty-four hours so her warriors could rest and recover their strength for the next battle. She would watch over them and ensure their sleep was not disturbed.

Doyle reached up with his hand and scratched his nose, and then slipped his arm around Bodie’s waist, snuggling closer to his partner, slinging a leg over Bodie’s with a contented sigh. Bodie wiggled down, settling deeper into the couch, resting his cheek against Doyle’s curls and tightening his arm around Doyle reflexively, protective even in sleep.

Outside, the gentle snow continued to fall.

tightening his arm around Doyle reflexively, protective even in sleep. This sums up their relationship so perfectly; Bodie is fiercely protective of his Doyle.

This is a lovely, heartwarming story. Thanks so much for posting.

As someone who has slept for 19 of the last 24 hours after a chaotic last 6 weeks of term in a busy school, this story really rang true for me. How wonderful that our lads have that angel looking after them. Thank you xx
