Discovered in a Box of Baubles - Day 21 - Happy Solstice!

Happy Winter Solstice, Northern Hemisphere - the sun will be at its lowest point in the sky at 10.02 Lads' time this morning, and from then on, things are going to start being a little bit brighter, even if we can barely perceive it at first.



Way, way back in 2006, I wrote a solstice fic called Perfect Alignment, and my then-partner-in-lj-crime, empty_mirrors, aka Pros author Josey, if you've not yet read any of her fab fics, made me this gorgeous banner to go with it. I thought it was worth another look. *g*

I did have a fic planned for today, but despite spending all day on it yesterday, it's not ready, and today is my last working day before my holidays (I timed that badly!), and so I'm afraid it's going to have to wait. Writing Pros all day yesterday has put me in the mood for writing Pros today too, though, so I'm going to fall back on something I've done for Dialj before.

In between work, I will write mini Pros fics in answer to requests, all day today, right until midnight lads' time tonight when my Box of Baubles is closed up again for the day. So please - comment below about a moment you would like to see between our lads, or about anyone else in/connected with CI5, and I will write and post that moment for you today. Do you just like to imagine them in a specific place, or at a specific time? Is there a burning question between them that you've never felt has been answered? Have a bullet-proof kink that hasn't been satisfied for a while? Let me know! *g* Lengths will vary according to the way my writing-head goes, but I imagine they will all be at least a hundred words.

And in the time I've taken to type that, 10.02am has been and gone - the light is coming back, northern hemisphere, our days are getting just that much longer and brighter from now on! *vbg* (Sorry southern hemisphere, but on the bright side, you've still got ages of summer left! *g*)

This part of the argument in The Rack always catches my attention:

BODIE: Now, come on, Ray. The Old Man needs us. Look, he's fighting for his life out there. I've never seen him like this. We owe him one.

DOYLE: [laughs] Listen to him: "we". What happened to the "look after Number One" credo, then?

BODIE: Yeah, well, don't do as I say, do as I do.

There are several bits there that feel as if they have stories behind them that we never get to see. Anything strike you?

My first thought was to ask for one or more of the characters addressing the similarity between CI5's methods and those of the police in "In the Public Interest." I decided that might be too complicated for a mini fic, though. I expect there have been fics that tackle the question to one degree or another. Maybe when I grow up I'll write one, too.

I do still wonder why Bodie and Doyle owe Cowley one, though. (Why do they owe him? Why only one? Or is that just a figure of speech?)

Hmmn, I've always thought "owe him one" was a figure of speech - and maybe in a general sense too, for being a good boss? They both say in various eps that he's the best man they've ever worked for, and Doyle says he was glad to get out of the police and join "this mob", and Major Nairn (I think it's him - too lazy to go and check right now!) tells Cowley he's surprised that Bodie's still alive after what he'd been doing before, so I suppose I've usually taken it in that sense. He's always stuck up for them, so now they owe it to him to be loyal and help him.

A good one to think about though!

I think CI5's methods are almost addressed in the series itself - in Involvement Ann Holly points out the issues, and of course in The Rack Ann Mather makes some excellent points about their power and methods (albeit it's brushed aside in the end).

Doyle is definitely a conundrum I'd like to work out a bit more - so many things he says suggest that he should hate the power that CI5 has and the methods it uses, and yet he never hesitates to use them himself - even threatening to torture someone in one of Cowley's play-acts (perhaps he just has faith that Cowley won't have to take it that far). Is it just that he and Bodie both trust in Cowley to make the decisions and that they're just, as soldiers are expected to do? Hmmn...! I think alot of these things have been addressed in various fics - but my mind is blank for titles at the moment!

At the end of When The Heat Cools Off I always wondered if Bodie was waiting for Doyle after he visited Haydon for the last time. Was Bodie outside? Did they go to the pub or did they go home and .....?

Would be nice to know. :-)

At the end of Wild Justice and Bodie asks if Cowley would have pulled the trigger. . . .do Bodie and Doyle finally talk? I wonder what they'd say. . . . .
