Discovered In Graceland - August 1977

On the 16th August, 1977, the world was rocked by the news of the death of Elvis Presley. I was still at primary school, but I remember going out and sitting on my favourite branch in one of our willow trees, and being quite sad about it. He was Elvis, and he'd died, and I knew he was real, even though he was in the movies that I'd loved, and it felt as though I knew-him-but-I-didn't-know-him, and I missed him. Ah, beginner's fandom...

Our MS and LC have vague connections with The King:

LC rather looked like young Elvis, in this photo from his Mojo days (well, but you know what I mean *g*)


and of course MS played the older Elvis, the last Elvis, to great acclaim, on stage in Are You Lonesome Tonight?


So what about the lads, what connection might they have had with Elvis? They would have noticed his death, surely - didn't we all? (Memories and thoughts below, please - what was it like in the UK when the news came out?) But would they have recognised a lyric if they'd heard one?

"I'm goin' to Graceland, Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee..." ;-) I have, actually - been there, I mean. I've got a picture of myself as a teenager, sitting in his pink jeep.

Pity I can't actually think of a reasonable way to get the guys down there. I was bouncing ideas off my husband and all he kept saying was, "They'd have no authority in the US. Cowley would never send them."

Grr... that's what I get for marrying a man in the public service. :-p

Never mind! I'll write some kind of story. Something to do with Americans, and Elvis, one way or another. What's my lyric?

I've been to Graceland too - very cool it was! And I had a fried banana and peanut butter sandwich at Sun Studios... yum... *g*

'course there's no reason the lads would have to be working if they visited Graceland, you know... and no reason either that they'd have to be in America to do anything Elvis-ish - I'm fairly sure he was pretty well-known in the UK too, you know, and MS was in England when he played Elvis on stage... *g*

I thought so. What if they would be bodyguards for some British vips visiting the USA? Would they have at-least limited authorities to act?

I could think of some rivalry in support for the artists, Elvis vs. Beatles by example. I'd say Bodie is the elvis type though I'm sure Doyle also knows how to wriggle his hips in the right way.
