Discovered Where...?

empty_mirrors and I were chatting online across the world - her in Wales, me in Alaska - and worrying about whether anyone at all would want to play with us in the comm. *g*
Which perhaps makes it sound as if I'm about to wind up the comm, but I'm definitely not! We've come so far, it might be fun to try and make it to 20 years ofdiscoveredinalj. *vbg* But...
...it probably hasn't escaped anyone's attention that there's a bit of a problem with Russia right now. I mean, there are problems all around the world at the moment, and any number of nasty regimes, but the problem in Russia involves direct aggression towards other countries, and Ukraine in particular, and it is the server host for Lj.
I don't believe in punishing the citizens of a country for what it's government is forcing them to do, and Russia is far from the only country with some serious issues when it comes to people's freedoms, so I don't see the need to run screaming away from Lj. However - as my paid-lj renewal approached, and the situation is still far from resolving, I had to think about this a bit more. In fact Lj has extended paid account time by a considerable amount, presumably in the hope that its users won't disappear, so it wouldn't technically be an issue to carry on hosting the annual Dialj Christmas/winter/Solstice/let-there-be-light calendar here (I need the extra picture space etc. that a paid account gives me to post the calendar/icons etc.) But of course I'm not the only person to take into consideration, and many people have moved off Livejournal when one issue or another has arisen.
So the question is: where should I post this year's Dialj Christmas/winter/Solstice/let-there-be-light calendar? It would be far too time-consuming to try and post in both places, so a choice needs to be made. I could continue posting it here on LJ, or I could post directly to the Dialj mirror account on Dreamwidth (I'd have to buy a paid account there, but I could manage that if I'm not paying Lj for a year). I like the Lj format, so I don't really want to look at other alternatives, but if you know of another forum that you think might be just perfect, please do suggest it.
In the meantime - what else, but a poll?

I know they were trying to do a useful thing at Dw with the whole readers/subscribers/whatever separation, but I just find it confusing and annoying - and I don't see what's wrong with the idea of being "friends"!

I think the Russians using lj are, like everyone else, something of a mixture. It was definitely a forum for rebels and free speech at one point, but I don't know how independent it still is (bearing in mind that its hard for any major forum to be properly independent in some circumstances). If you check the Russian and Ukrainian Cyrillic feeds though (which you can translate through google), you can see opinions and thoughts on all sides of the invasion — and I never think that paying less attention to people is a better idea than paying more attention to them. People who are treated like pariahs ending up feeling and then acting like pariahs — it's a stupid vicious circle. I did feel uncomfortable with the idea of paying money into a Russian institution — but Lj has by-passed that by extending our account time, so that's not an issue now either.
I'm not sure there's a "volume" of Pros fans anywhere any more, which is sad — except perhaps at Dialj at Christmas! *vbg* And you guys had a good number of people at BistoCon, of course. *vvbg* And Dw certainly seems quiet on the Pros front too, although various people seem to have moved there, or else started a Dw rather than a Lj. I posted a version of this over at Dw too, asking for comments (it wouldn't let me do a poll, because my account there isn't paid) — it'll be interesting to see if anyone at all responds there who isn't still on lj...
Maybe we need to make a big group concerted effort — lots of us — to post Pros to Lj again (and I'm partly thinking of![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)

I mean, I have a paid account and don't use it because I don't understand it. LJ is my fan home and I really hope it will survive.
And even if it is a little quiet here at the moment I have more notifications from LJ than from DW.

So you've got a paid account at Dw, but you still can't post images easily? I thought it was just because mine was a free account that I couldn't do it - that sucks...
I see there are Pros fans over on Dw, but it's true I can't see many Pros posts there - I figured that might partly be because people haven't given me access to their Dws, or whatever it is you do there, but perhaps not then. Maybe the people who went there were basically done with Pros anyway...
Maybe we should make an effort to post more Pros over here at Lj (and I know I'm really really guilty right now too...)

So it might be only my inability to understand their information about putting images into any posts, but I don't think so. It isn't as easy as it is here on LJ.

Date: 2022-09-21 06:21 pm (UTC)I went to have another look at their instructions for posting pictures, and I think you have to upload pics separately to the Dw Upload image page, and then cut and paste the code it gives you to your post. Or you can cut and paste the code it gives you into "Insert Picture" by the posting window, but it's only a url code, and you don't seem to have as much control over the image as you do at Lj, at least not without adding a lot of extra code yourself... I wonder why they didn't just copy that part of Lj's functionality too...

I think it's something of a vicious circle - people don't post, so people don't come and look or comment, so people don't post... And there's not much rhyme or reason to when people do/don't comment, I think its mostly to do with the varying patterns in their own lives. Sometimes people don't have time to comment, sometimes they can't think of anything to say, sometimes they think they'll come back and do it later and don't have a chance, sometimes they think they're just being repetitive and saying the same thing over and over, and the post-er might be bored with them, sometimes they're just not in the mood to be social, even on social media... I remember Josey and I used to spend ages trying to work out why some posts or Dialj challenges had more responses than others, and we never could find a pattern! *g*
But I know what you mean - it's discouraging when people don't reply to your posts. I know I've felt like that quite often over the years! So far its always been worth trying again another day, though, and I guess that's what I'll do this time too. Maybe we should all have a concerted posting month, and make our flists sing with Pros, just to prove to each other that we're still here. *g*
