...quorum!

So there are fifteen of us via the poll who'd like to see the Christmas/Winter/Solstice/Let-there-be-Light again, which hopefully means we'll have enough people and posts to see through a good chunk of the festive season, so...

...watch this space. *g*

So... it's nearly the end of October, and I feel like I'm a bit early for this, but given the... the everything in the world at the moment, and the ever-fewer of us there are (and I know I've been well among that fewer this year), I have an important question:

Do we want a Discovered-in-the-December-Winter-Solstice-Christmas-General-Let-There-Be-Light-or-a-Bit-of-Shade-in-the-Southern-Hemisphere calendar celebration this year?

Or have we passed our sell-by date? It'd be a bit of a shame, cos I've been hanging on for this one, but...? What do you reckon? Shall we one more time?

Reply by poll and/or in the comments... *g*

...with a reminder for everyone who posts to the comm.

For some reason I'm having to remind more and more people individually after they post this year, so I'm pinching a bit of Krisser's day to try and save time by reminding everyone at once.

Please post your story information as a trailer, not a header, and put it under the cut!

If your story is only short and doesn't need a cut, then please make a special one for the trailer so that it can't be seen.

(Please don't try and use fancy spoiler cuts that make words invisible until highlighted, because they only work if someone's lj has a white background on all pages - I can still see them on mine, for instance, because my background is blue/grey).

We've had this policy at Dialj since the comm began, about seventeen years ago, and we've been through multiple explanations and hassles about it over the years, but our original reasons for doing it still stand - and they're over on the User Info page, where they've always been, but I'll copy them here again for clarity.

1. Please include the following "trailer" to help with archiving at the end of your post (rather than as a header at the beginning):
Title:
Author:
Slash or Gen:
Archive at ProsLib/Circuit:
Author's Name for Archiving (if different to above):
Disclaimer:
Notes: (including warnings if you really wish to - these are not compulsory. Readers note: these will be included at the end of a story so as not to spoiler it for people who prefer their fic unadulterated!)

We use "trailers" rather than "headers" for a very specific reason. There's a long history in Pros of fans preferring not to be spoiled for a story by being warned ahead of time what is going to happen. If warnings etc are at the top of a story, then readers have no choice but to see them and be spoiled - but if we put them at the end of a story, readers have a choice: they can scroll quickly to the bottom of the post and find out whether there's anything to which they might be sensitive, or they can just read happily, and without being spoilered, from the top of the story. Please respect this compromise!

(I'm also aware that I might have inadvertantly encouraged people to forget to hide their trailers by forgetting to add an lj-cut when I posted Felicity M. Parkinson's story - but please don't do as I do, do as the comm says! (Especially since it also says "trailer"!) And also feel free to come in and kick me if I ever forget something myself *g*!)

I don't really want to make this post, but sadly I think the time has come. [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj is 17 years old now, and I am still amazed that it's carried on so long after [livejournal.com profile] empty_mirrors and I were chatting online across the world - her in Wales, me in Alaska - and worrying about whether anyone at all would want to play with us in the comm. *g*

Which perhaps makes it sound as if I'm about to wind up the comm, but I'm definitely not! We've come so far, it might be fun to try and make it to 20 years of [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj. *vbg* But...

...it probably hasn't escaped anyone's attention that there's a bit of a problem with Russia right now. I mean, there are problems all around the world at the moment, and any number of nasty regimes, but the problem in Russia involves direct aggression towards other countries, and Ukraine in particular, and it is the server host for Lj.

I don't believe in punishing the citizens of a country for what it's government is forcing them to do, and Russia is far from the only country with some serious issues when it comes to people's freedoms, so I don't see the need to run screaming away from Lj. However - as my paid-lj renewal approached, and the situation is still far from resolving, I had to think about this a bit more. In fact Lj has extended paid account time by a considerable amount, presumably in the hope that its users won't disappear, so it wouldn't technically be an issue to carry on hosting the annual Dialj Christmas/winter/Solstice/let-there-be-light calendar here (I need the extra picture space etc. that a paid account gives me to post the calendar/icons etc.) But of course I'm not the only person to take into consideration, and many people have moved off Livejournal when one issue or another has arisen.

So the question is: where should I post this year's Dialj Christmas/winter/Solstice/let-there-be-light calendar? It would be far too time-consuming to try and post in both places, so a choice needs to be made. I could continue posting it here on LJ, or I could post directly to the Dialj mirror account on Dreamwidth (I'd have to buy a paid account there, but I could manage that if I'm not paying Lj for a year). I like the Lj format, so I don't really want to look at other alternatives, but if you know of another forum that you think might be just perfect, please do suggest it.

In the meantime - what else, but a poll?
[Poll #2120118]
I make no promises about what will be done in the end, and of course there might not be enough people still interested in carrying on anyway, but I thought it would be a good idea to gather some thoughts and hopes and suggestions.... *g* Do feel free to comment about it below, as well as answering the poll.

I've also made this post at Livejournal, but if you don't want to/can't respond there, please feel free to reply here instead.

I've posted a poll over at Discoveredinalj on Lj but Dw won't let me do that here, so please either go there to reply via the link above, or comment here on these options:
- carry on using Lj for the Dialj Christmas/winter/Solstice/let-there-be-light calendar
- post directly to Dw for the Dialj Christmas/winter/Solstice/let-there-be-light calendar
- something else that you suggest in the comments
- none of the above because it's time to wind up Dialj/you're not interested in either participating or reading

I make no promises about what will be done in the end, and of course there might not be enough people still interested in carrying on anyway, but I thought it would be a good idea to gather some thoughts and hopes and suggestions.... *g* Do feel free to comment about it generally below, as well as answering the poll.
