The Final Chapter
It’s been quite a while since I have written in my journal. Truth be told, it was lost in the early days of my stay in London. Now that the family is moving back to America, I found it in the clearing out.
I suppose I should explain. Carson, technically my owner, is retiring from his position as American Ambassador to the Court of St. James. He and Mrs. Carson have been here for four years and now that their granddaughter has graduated university, they have decided it is time to leave. Since Samantha is going to start medical school in the fall, she won’t be able to take her cat Tinkerbell, so Tink will be joining Hastings and I on the Maryland farm. Looking forward to introducing Tink to Red, the ginger tom who rules the barn.
But back to the journal. So much has happened that I need to catch up. First off, my pups Missy and Junior have done quite well for themselves. Missy got her grand champion title and retired. First, she had her own litter of puppies – I guess that makes me a grand-dog, ugh – then went on to become a famous shampoo model. Well, she did get my gorgeous fur. Junior has been very successful and, following in my paw prints, won Best in Show at Crufts a few years ago. I saw him when some magazine wanted to do a feature about the Mother/Son winning duo. He has turned into a lovely dog, naturally, but still thinks my tail is a chew toy. So undignified!
Life has been very routine these last few years. Periodic visits to Windsor to play with the Corgis. A new feature was a little boy who came one day with his mother. I was a little leery because small children tend to be appalling, but he was quite nice. Quiet and respectful. I learned later that he was the grandson of the lady who owns the Corgis. His mother made sure her son didn’t tease me. I like that in a mother.
That brings me to my special friends, Bodie and Ray/Doyle/Sunshine. They are agents for a crime fighting organization called CI5. We met originally at Crufts when some animal rights activists tried to cause trouble. Again, they were there when some really bad men tried to hurt Carson and Mrs. Carson. CI5 stopped them cold. In case you were wondering, after Crufts I had been made an honorary agent of CI5 so I have followed the careers of Bodie and Ray/Doyle/Sunshine ever since. Plus, I think Bodie and I have a special bond.
A few years ago, Bodie called Mrs. Carson to ask if he could take me out for an afternoon. I know she thought it was strange, but she said he could. He came and got my lead and helped me into the silver car he always drove. I thought it was strange that Ray/Doyle/Sunshine wasn’t with him. They are always together. I mean really together. I am not sure how humans mate, but I can tell you those two are definitely mated for life.
Anyway, I could tell Bodie was sad and scared. The scent of fear was so strong. He drove to this big park and then we went for a walk. It seemed like hours and, quite frankly, I was getting tired when we came to an isolated bench and Bodie sat down. For a long time he just sat and stroked my head. He was so sad and I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how, so I laid my head in his lap. He looked down at me with those incredible blue eyes and then he began to cry. Almost broke my heart. Finally, the story came out. Ray/Doyle/Sunshine had been hurt, really badly, and Bodie was so afraid for him. There was no one he could share the pain with. His boss, that strange English Cow, would probably understand, but Bodie didn’t think it was right to talk to him for some reason. After a long time, the tears and sobs stopped and Bodie looked at me and smiled a little. He said, “Thanks, little one.” And I knew I had done something right that day.
Afterwards, I learned that Ray/Doyle/Sunshine had been shot by a crazy woman. He was in the hospital for a long time; they said he would be okay, but it would take a long time. I would see Bodie periodically, and while he was sad not to have his mate with him, he was no longer grieving. One time, much later, Bodie brought Ray/Doyle/Sunshine to see me. We sat in the sun and listened to the birds and looked at the flowers. They didn’t stay long because Ray/Doyle/Sunshine was still weak and Bodie worried about him.
That was a couple of years ago and they are both healthy and, I understand, they are now living together. Apparently, they had a talk with the Cow and worked everything out. I also heard that they are moving out of the field and going into management – training new agents. I am glad they won’t be in danger anymore, especially since I won’t be here to look out for them.
So, what does the future hold for Lady Willamena Bracknell? Who knows? First, I will get settled in America and see if Barney, my St. Bernard friend, is still around.
I’ve always wanted to be a spy and with my CI5 credentials, I think I will see if the FBI is hiring. If not, then I will try the CIA. After all, I still have my passport. Have lead, will travel!
