For me the taste of a Cox's Orange Pippin is such a vital part of the winter season it's almost impossible to imagine being without. And I'm not the only one. There's someone else who misses his Pippin and has gone as far as to commit bad poetry about it.

Apologies in advance.

And the text alone for the hard of seeing amongst us.

Ode to an Apple

Oh, Eve’s delight, thou horror you,
Who twists my heart and head
And leaves them both a corkscrewed mess.
Oh, Adam’s bane, who opened eyes best suited closed.
Who, with a single taste, brought down creation
And smashed the bedrock surety that was ‘I’.

So proud you were - rough-cheeked
Twixt sleeping nectarine and peach.
Red-streaked and flushed,
Ripened, and in part consumed.
Tooth tracks writ bold upon your skin,
Breath still burning deep within.

Watching, I had not thought myself observed until,
Turning, you offered up your serpent's smile.
Transforming casual hunger into passion,
Breathing life into long banked flame,
Raising heart, hope and flesh,
Tearing my soul from its foundation.

Naked then, and aware, I faced a greater truth.
That you, of all, must remain apart,
Forbidden in your straight-limbed tree,
Unavailable to the likes of me.
Forever beyond temptation,
Worthy only of casual mention.

And yet despite myself, you draw me forth.
Hands reaching, fingers all aquiver
With eagerness to caress your woody stem,
The complexity of your flavours
Rolling already across my tongue.
Tart and crisp perfection packed into a solitary bite
That has left the longest, deepest impression.

I blame your lopsided charm
For bringing me so close to harm.
Now no other fruit sits so sweet,
None but you proved me so soul weak,
No knowledge settled so soul deep,
As the desire to taste again
Of my Cox's Orange Pippin.

Oh dear. *g* That is so entirely in Bodie's style! Well, in one of Bodie's styles. *g* Oh, Eve's delight, indeed! There's both a wry humor to it and a bone deep desperation. Oh, yes, I like this. *g* Thank you!

Gods, the poem combined with those pics... Must I say that I not once thought about an apple or any other fruit while reading this? Love it - it's wonderful and sooo Bodie. Though I must admit the "woody stem" had me in stitches *G* But then again all those bite and skin references gave me goosebumps - in a very good way. Thanks a lot for sharing!

There is a wild and dangerous genius to you, no question..*g* This is brilliant. Love the power/ desperation of this: Who, with a single taste, brought down creation
And smashed the bedrock surety that was ‘I’.
And I 'heh-heh'ed' the dirtiest snicker when I got to the "woody stem" line.

Phew! Has it suddenly got hot in here? I loved the poem's concentration on fruit and sex and all the images that sprang from that. And the perfectly chosen sexy pictures. As I said, 'phew'...

Thanks!

Never more will my eyes behold
A winter apple, rosy, sweet and bold
with innocence - your lusty fruit
and woody stem convert me to more luscious truth.

You're a clever bugger *g*. It's so Bodie, and a wonderful mixture of sensuality and longing. Particularly like the second verse.

Very clever phrasing, and in a very Bodie-like way. :) And the picture version is absolutely gorgeous!
