April Drabble Challenges!
Apr. 12th, 2008 08:07 amAfter lots of requests for another one, I thought we might make April drabble challenge month, here at
discoveredinalj, with a series of differently themed/prompted drabble challenges.
A drabble is, of course, a short piece of writing that is exactly one hundred words long. It's not supposed to be just a snippet, or a snatch of conversation, it's supposed to be a whole story, an entire universe, told in just 100 words. According to Wikipedia, "The term comes from Monty Python's 1971 Big Red Book. In this book, "Drabble" was a word game where the first participant to write a novel wins. In order to make the game possible in the real world, it was agreed that 100 words would suffice."
Of course, we're not too fussy what we read about our lads, so as long as it's 100 words long, we don't mind how novel-like it is. I mean, if you really felt you had to write 100 words of porn-without-plot, we'd live with it... *g*
Oh, and if you'd like some inspiration (or just haven't seen these yet) - then here are some we prepared earlier: September 2007 Drabble Challenge, and of course The Hatstand archive has a whole section of drabbles if you'd like further examples... *g*
So - drabbles! If you comment below I will give you a random prompt to write your drabble around - when you're ready, simply post it to the comm! No need for cuts, since the posts will be so short anyway! Deadline is midnight on Sunday/Monday night, in whichever timezone you may be living (and as usual, if you move to Pago Pago briefly, that's just fine... *g*)
And finally - if anyone knows how to get rid of that large unsightly, and completely ridiculous gap between the dialj challenge banner and the beginning of posts below, I'd really appreciate hearing about it! I managed a bad banner (
empty_mirrors we miss you!), but it just looks silly up there on its own! Help?! Found it! Phew!

Your prompt is... "old father time"

Date: 2008-04-12 08:26 am (UTC)This may be because the new banner is smaller in depth than the previous. (i.e. 800x400 is now 800x200) You will need to change the number in the Account area. This is why whenever I change my own banner I keep the same size then I know it will fit and I don't have to fiddle.

Date: 2008-04-12 10:10 am (UTC)Oh -*rereads* - and thanks for the origins of the word 'drabble'. Just the sort of detail I love. I had wondered about that, too.

Date: 2008-04-12 11:19 am (UTC)I was gonna put in the famous Hemingway "drabble" too - really the shortest story ever, so not actually a drabble, but... I didn't. *g* Just for you, though:
"For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn."
How much of a story is there in just six words?!
As for your prompt... how about... "fences" *g*
