Entertain your American cousin, George Cowley told them.

After six weeks of close cooperation with Washington, Doyle was fast friends with agent Berkowitz, while Bodie only admitted grudging respect for his suit.

“What do you think, then?” Doyle asked over three pints of bitter. “A kickabout down the rec?”

Man from CIA took one sip before leaning away from Bodie and in to Doyle.

“If you like,” he said, “I have a rubber.”

Bodie managed to smile even as his pint went down the wrong way.

“No, you’re alright,” Doyle whispered kindly.  “I’m not going to be making any mistakes.”

*sporfles*

I actually had that happen to me my first week in America... erm... -- not exactly, no Bodie & Doyle, rats! -- but a misunderstanding over the word rubber and my first bi-lingual lesson that I was looking for the word "eraser."

Sorry, I digress...

I really like the touches about Bodie liking his suit and Doyle whispering "kindly."

Thank you!

Okay, I give up - either my British isn't good enough, or my American isn't. *g* So after sitting here pondering for a while, I just *have* to ask... Of course I get the American/British rubber...er...miscommunication; what I don't get is why the CIA guy is telling Doyle he has one. I'm trying to think of American interpretations of "kickabout down the rec" that would inspire this response, but I'm obviously missing something, which wouldn't be the first time... :-O Please please please enlighten me, because I'm feeling dense as a post!

I'm English, I just live on this side of the pond right now! :D

There is no hidden meaning for that expression.

I *think* it's just that Doyle is making an innocent suggestion for what they might do with their time and the CIA man is making a counter suggestion of a different kind of "entertainment" based on his attraction to Doyle.

:snort: No, I think this is my problem, not yours - I *did* actually get that from what you wrote; I was just certain there had to be more that I was missing, and I was searching desperately for hidden meanings. Sometimes things are simpler than I attempt to make them! But that's good - very seldom that a drabble actually makes me think!

Though of course, those are the ones that also make me long for the rest of the story! *g* Especially here; I really find very endearing, for some reason, the idea of the CIA guy fancying Doyle, and hitting on him - chatting him up, very poorly ;-) - while Bodie listens on, choking on his pint. And Doyle letting him down kindly, since he, of course, already has another bed to be in...

*snicker* Interesting use of the prompt and I'm very proud of Bodie not spluttering his drink all over the table. Thank you!

I blamed it on the Yank not having a head for British beer *g*

Like Doyle's response.

I'll admit to being in the same boat as Jess, thinking, "Wait, I get the play on rubber from Doyle's perspective. But what does 'kickabout down the rec' have to do with one?" Good to know the problem is all with me! :-)

Like the others, my particular "hee!" with this came from Bodie liking poor Berkowitz's suit and Doyle whispering "kindly." I wish I could explain why both tickled me. But they did. :-)

Thank you very much for playing.

But I must be on your twisted wavelength, as I chortled WAY before Bodie choked on his pint..Smashing drabble, thank you. You fly by the seat of your pants more often.*g*
