He smiled. Subtle in its effect, it crossed his mouth, twisting it into beauty unlit before;
travelled on to his eyes, slanting them with warmth. Lost, Doyle capitulated.

Hyperion to a Satyr
Sebastian

Bodie and Doyle --
multifaceted,
undeniably exquisite on screen and captivating in writing.

One portion of Bodie's uniqueness is his smile.
In his smiles, grins, smirks, beams (!) we see so much emotion -
his expressions of joy, menace, delight, regret, tenderness.
Like Doyle in Hyperion, we capitulate.

This 'project' began simply while reading, thinking to myself, "*That* is his smile, exactly!" and feeling awe at our writers' ability to capture things with such clarity and beauty. I decided to try and find some of those expressions on film, and find images which fit in some way with the words.

It's only Bodie's smiles, but I remind myself that part of the captivation in these smiles is born in Doyle's unique perception of Bodie - many of these smiles are either caused by Doyle or are shared - reciprocal - reflected between the two of them.

I don't think it's possible to capture all of Bodie's smiles. I've gathered these from a small portion of footage and from an even smaller porportion of the written words we have. I also know that a single frozen frame cannot hope to encapsulate the power and range of the written smiles, or of the onscreen smiles, but it's what I was able to work with. I wish that I had the talent with graphics that some of you have, too - I don't think I can do it justice, but I gave it a go. Limited only by time, not by desire, it's a start. Smile, it's Bodie!

Thank you so much for putting this together.

Paris I'm absolutely gobsmacked and, just for a change, lost for words! These are all ab-sol-ute-ly beautiful, most of which are completely new to me, too. I began trying to remember my favourites so I could tell you about them and then gave up cos they're all wonderful. I suppose pluperfect favourites would be one in particular on the first page, Bodie in black with holster and on the same page, second line down, him with jacket and open-necked shirt (he's so cheeky and gorgeous), and I've always had a very soft spot for the scene in Hunter-Hunted when he's guarding Doyle's house at night and the laser travels over his face and you've captured that scene on the second to last page. This has actually made me much more aware of how many different kinds of smiles he has, so thank you for that!

I know I shall return to them again and again, and I will probably come back here once I've composed myself, stopped dribbling and *tried* to think of something more original to say. In the meantime, thanks so much for this wonderful contribution.

What a truly amazing idea and contribution! I love, love, love good fic quotes, and the way you blended some truly wonderful fic moments with the snapshots is nothing short of genius. I am in awe of how talented this fandom is.

As an aside, there are enough unknown quotes for me to inspire me to track down some authors I've not read yet - so that's got to be good!

Thank you, and a garland at your feet for this, Paris

Wow--these are gorgeous! Not only is it wonderful to see so many Bodie faces, it's also great to have a taste of so many fics, some of which I shall now be searching out. Thank you so much for such a great treat!

Just wanted to add that I spent part of today reading "Memoirs of a Merc," by Alexandra, because of the quote you included, and I adored it. What a wonderful find! I've added it to my favorites, and all because of you. Thank you so much!

What originality! I love this. I'm so very happy you thought of it. The images and lovely, and the way you've paired them with the words really brings it all together. Thanks so much for such a terrific and generous gift.

It's me again - sooner than I'd thought with my tail dangling limply between my legs.

I'm so stupid and blind for not *seeing* and realising that there was writing on the pics - literally, my eyes are that bad. So this is such a brilliant contribution, Paris - not only do you give us the beauty of Bodie but also some lovely quotes from stories. And I love the quote on the pic I'd already mentioned from Sandy Herrold. Thanks so much for doing all of this.

Wow! I'm lost for words. That's brilliant. Some beautiful pictures (unusual ones, too, that I've not seen in isolation before) and reminders of some wonderful stories - not to mention the perfect matching of pictures to words. I can't get over the sheer originality of what people are coming up with for this calendar. This is an amazing idea and one I'd never have thought of in a million years. Thank you!

Sorry, don't want to drive you insane but I keep thinking of additional things I want to *say* (I always jump in far too quickly). Seeing the words right next to their faces e.g. the et in italia ego quote, seems to bring new life to the words and, it must be my imagination, seems to give their faces a new kind of focus as if I'm seeing them for the first time. I'm really loving your choice of quotes.

Again, thanks so much for doing all this, Paris - it's a lovely gift.

Oh wow! And wow again!
Y'know, I used to be a strictly Doyle girl but I really think this could win me over. Perhaps I'd better go through it a few more times, just to be sure!
Seriously, absolutely stunning, such an original idea and I echo all the comments about how wonderfully the words and pics compliment each other. I too will be searching out some of the stories to re-read.
Thank you so much for this wonderful contribution, Paris.

Me again. I feel like crying with the sheer *frustration* of not being able to sit beside you and say 'oh yes! love that one' and '*that* one is so beautiful' and '*that* pairing is so apt'. The words and photos seem to bounce off each other, or one throws new light on the other.

*And* you're refreshing my memory - it's almost frightening how I've long forgotten beautiful passages from stories I *know* I've read but simply didn't recognise e.g. Love's Worn Circuit by Fanny Adams. This is such a brilliant idea, Paris, thanks *again*.

Wow. (As others have said.) Gorgeous! (As others have said.) Um... Okay, I can't be original here. *g* These are *great*. Thanks so much. I love the variety--amazed by the variety--and having them capture those wonderful moments in the stories...perfect. This was just brilliant. Thank you so much!

Thank you!

Gosh – what an original surprise behind the door marked Dec 19th on this calendar! Must have taken you ages but you can so tell it’s a labour of love *g* All the pics are gorgeous but some, seen out of context, are just breath-taking! And lots of quotes from fics I have not seen or read before, always a bonus as it means I have more to yet discover! A great idea and so well executed. Thank you for this lovely treat after a hard day’s work :)

Terrific idea & what a labour of love! This must have taken ages, but it was certainly worth it. Bodie does have a range of smiles, doesn't he - although some are more like grimaces (ducks hastily).

You did a great job with the juxtaposition of image & quotation :)

How about doing something similar for us Ray-babes? Please?

Some great combinations of smiles and quotes, Paris... I love the way you ended with the Hyperion quote, and that mirror view. Wonderful work :-)
