multifaceted,
undeniably exquisite on screen and captivating in writing.
One portion of Bodie's uniqueness is his smile.
In his smiles, grins, smirks, beams (!) we see so much emotion -
his expressions of joy, menace, delight, regret, tenderness.
Like Doyle in Hyperion, we capitulate.
This 'project' began simply while reading, thinking to myself, "*That* is his smile, exactly!" and feeling awe at our writers' ability to capture things with such clarity and beauty. I decided to try and find some of those expressions on film, and find images which fit in some way with the words.
It's only Bodie's smiles, but I remind myself that part of the captivation in these smiles is born in Doyle's unique perception of Bodie - many of these smiles are either caused by Doyle or are shared - reciprocal - reflected between the two of them.
I don't think it's possible to capture all of Bodie's smiles. I've gathered these from a small portion of footage and from an even smaller porportion of the written words we have. I also know that a single frozen frame cannot hope to encapsulate the power and range of the written smiles, or of the onscreen smiles, but it's what I was able to work with. I wish that I had the talent with graphics that some of you have, too - I don't think I can do it justice, but I gave it a go. Limited only by time, not by desire, it's a start. Smile, it's Bodie!

I had some interesting times while working on this - times when I'd have words which I couldn't leave behind, that I had to find the perfect image for. Then at other moments I'd have the perfect image, an image so wonderful that I had to include it, but couldn't find the words to fit with it... They have to click, somehow. I'm not sure that I succeeded in every case, but I tried to. Sometimes I had an urge to make a big footnote and say things like "Ummm, you see, the part where he smiles, that happens in the millisecond after this look on his face, right?" Oh well - I know that we all have great imaginations, and we all can 'see' the possibilities.

I already mentioned to you that I chose the mirror view partly because I was unable to locate anything that came close to that smile (in the time I had) and I also liked the idea of leaving it so that each of us could bring up our own perfect version of his smile to go with that look in his eyes. Plus, the idea of ending with a look back in a mirror - the neverending reflection was perfect.
Once again - I thank *you* for your wonderful work - there was a quote from Well Hall that I was working with, but I couldn't find the exact cap - it was important to me that he actually have his black on- and I ran out of time. I'll keep looking. :)
