*creeps out of lurkerdom and winces at the brightness of the sunshine on the snow*

It's only 518 words and hasn't had any beta input but please enjoy! It was our lane and car park that inspired me so have a picture, too. (There's a trailer at the end but I don't know how to point to it from here.)

Squeak-scrunch.

Their footsteps were loud and their clothes were vivid against the snow.

“A good job we aren’t trying to follow anyone. They’d hear us coming a mile off.” Doyle swung his arms, hands enclosed in suede gloves, gesturing at the street and the whiteness.

“D’you think snow will scare the terrorists then?” Bodie sounded amused but dubious.

“No but they’ll be as obvious as us and that’s not their style. They’ll stay indoors perfecting their bombs and their plans - all the more work for us when it thaws. Take it from me, when I was a copper we spent snowy days inside. The criminals were all inside too, one way or another.” Doyle grinned.

“We’ll probably be stuck in records,” said Bodie and they groaned in unison, turning into the car park, even though they were on foot. They’d struggled to get here and last night they’d abandoned the Capri. Now they wanted to check its antifreeze, maybe tuck it up with a rug inside its bonnet. The snow was pristine, glinting in the sunshine. They were the first to arrive, at least in the car park.

“Why have we trudged through this lot to get to records, then?” Doyle was beginning to sound grumpy. It had been a long walk, past marooned cars, a bus that was going nowhere and signs to say the Underground was closed - the drivers couldn’t get to work, it seemed.

“Got to show willing,” said Bodie, trying to sound bracing and failing.

“Willing to what? Push pens?”

“Defend Queen and country?”

“Nah - not a chance in this weather.” The finality in Doyle’s voice made Bodie’s lips twitch but as he started to reply they heard snow-altered footsteps behind them and turned with lightning reflexes only slightly slowed by the stuff underfoot. Murphy, Jax and Susan, all muffled up to the nines, were at the gate, obviously sharing their determination to prove they could get to work despite the fact that the capital had ground to a halt.

Afterwards nobody was quite sure who had thrown the first snowball, except of course, the thrower and they weren’t telling. Doyle always thought it been Bodie.

Soon it was a melee, every man (or woman) for him or herself. Snow flew, aimed by expert marksmen, powder drifting from the white trajectories, settling on clothes and hair. Soft thwacks joined the squeal of dodging feet and there was carefree laughter. At some point Cowley arrived and after a quick glance joined in, his face cracking in a huge and unaccustomed grin.

A snowball hit Doyle exactly on his heart - an accurate thwump then clumps of compressed snow clinging to his wool jacket, melting slowly from the warmth of the lithe body beneath. He looked across at Bodie, and blinked eyelashes frosted with the snow that was falling again, gentle but inexorable against the sun.

“Got me,” he acknowledged with a smile and Bodie gave a small almost formal bow

“I know,” his expression said, and he rolled another snowball in gloved hands while Doyle stood waiting, wrapped in the pleasure of the morning..

Ah, that's nice! (Love the photo, too--you do do pretty snow in England.) And see? Snow is magical! Witness Cowley joining in! This is a lovely way to start the day--and I love the palpable hit. *g*

Thank you!

Ooh, not read it yet, but with modly-hat on, could you possibly put the story and trailer under a cut, please? The pic is fine left out at the top though - fun! *g* Thank you!

ETA - Oh, and I've just noticed it's locked too - would you mind terribly unlocking it? There are still some non-lj people who like to see the stories etc from Dialj too... (If you've got a very specific reason for locking, then do let me know!)

Oh, that was fun - love the thought of them all with that holiday-in-the-snow atmosphere, playing snowballs! And I did like the nice warming end... *g* Yeay for non-lurkdom - shall hope the thaw is inspiring too... *g*

Lovely - really captured the surprise element of snow for those of us who aren't used to it! And lovely that even our George was enjoying it.
Thanks for sharing this.

Nononononono! No need for beating! *g* Lots of people seem to lock their ljs these days (it didn't seem to be so much when I first came onto lj - that's how the world goes, I guess... *g*) so no worries. I don't think we even mention it on the user page, just assume that people will default to unlocked - I'll see what I can do about that, in fact. And no worries about the cut either, it's easy enough to mention... *g*

Actually, if you'd like (and no worries about it, cos I've never done it myself) - the way I've noticed some people doing the trailers, so that people can see where they are, is in a separate cut. So the story itself goes under the first cut (d'you use the html window, or rich text?) and then the trailer goes under a second cut, so there are "cut titles" if you like for them both - so if they want to see the trailer first then they can, and if they want to go straight to the story, they can... I can tell you more specifically if you use html, but not so much if you use the rich text window to post, cos I never do... *g*

I can also erase this modly thread too... *g*

Oh okay, it shall stay then... *g*

To do two cuts you just need to end the first cut, and then start a new one. You end it with <*/lj-cut*> (without the asterisks, of course!) at the end of the story/pics/whatever, and then just start the next one as normal. So you can have a zillion different cuts in a single post, if you like... *g*

I work in a large comprehensive school with 1500 students so I've had my fill of snowball fights this last week, but if they were all like this one then I'd happily join in!!

They do all open, but the top of the window opens to the top of the cut - a good example is on Day 24 of the Christmas Stocking challenge (KWS's day). So if you click on the trailer info first, the first line of that is at the top of the screen, and you don't see the story first. If you click on the cut for the story, then the screen opens scrolled higher up. It doesn't work if the fic is very very short, so that it'd be all on the same screen anyway, but in other cases it might be useful... Save all those warn-me-now-ers fretting, and mean that people are less likely to be spoiled. In fact, come to think of it, it should work the other way around too, and maybe even better - if you clicked on the story cut, then it'd take you below the header, so you'd miss it either way...

I'm wondering if the two-cut-scroll thing is a new-ish lj thing, actually, because I've not noticed it before and it seems like a nice way around the header-spoiler thing (if you can get people to remember to use it, of course - if they forget at the bottom, you're not spoiled anyway, but if they forget at the top - automatic spoilers...)

Oh this is lovely! I adore that the agents are all trudging through snow to get to work (just like us!), and that Cowley gleefully joins in the snowball fight... And those last couple of lines are gorgeous!
Thank you!

Lovely. Now that's making lemonade out of lemons. We know the lads and lasses, and even Cowley, have playful moments in canon and fresh snow is a terrific motivator!

Oh thank you! I like the snowball fight, but the first part was the fic I really wanted to read - CI5 agents walking in to work and the baddies out of action along with everyone else. And Capri love!

This is a delight (and of course it was Bodie!) - but the last lines, oh the last lines take it to a whole new level. I love "wrapped in the pleasure of the morning", and that whole exchange speaks volumes about them - to my mind this
“Got me,” he acknowledged with a smile and Bodie gave a small almost formal bow

“I know,” his expression said, and he rolled another snowball in gloved hands while Doyle stood waiting, wrapped in the pleasure of the morning.

- is a beautiful description of Doyle's happy acceptance of Bodie's love. Thank you so much for the treat!

Catching up on some reading
