Tranquility

The critical care was a noisy ward; the whine of oscilloscopes, the scream of warning alarms, the suck and whoosh of ventilators buffeting from all sides. Families cried softly over their loved ones as Bodie strode past each room.
Doyle’s bed was a odd sanctuary, full of memories. Bodie sat beside him as long as he was allowed. The cacophony pressed in on his nerves, distracting him from watching over his partner. Doyle was far from relaxed, twitching and moaning in his drugged slumber. Bodie had to be vigilant; to prevent this from ever happening again.
The nurses sent him home late, but the clangs and dings interrupted his dreams; sleep was impossible.
In the cool night, Bodie crept back. He walked in shadows along the halls, evading the nurses, to Doyle’s room. When he heard the constant bing of the heart machine, the shriek of alarms from down the hall, the whisper of oxygen going in and out of Doyle’s lungs, Bodie found a strange peace. This was where he was meant to be.
He wasn’t one to pray, but looking at his partner’s still face, Bodie said thank you.
When Doyle opened his eyes, Bodie said, “love.”

Date: 2012-12-22 04:15 pm (UTC)That was such a vivid piece of writing - you never think of hospitals as noisy places, but the way you describe it makes it obvious. I love the idea of Bodie finding peace in the night too. Thank you for sharing.
