Here's a little 100 word drabble from the lads. Merry Christmas!

"It's your birthday tomorrow isn't it, sunshine?" Ray looked across at his partner.

"Hmmm," replied Bodie, sounding bored, "and here we are on yet another bloody forty-eight hour stake out."

"Why didn't your mum call you Noel or summat Christmassy instead, then? It's the day before Christmas Eve. "

"Named after the three wise men, wasn't I," came the languid reply.

"Nah, come on. Tell."

"S'true. Three Kings and all that. Nobody knows their real names, do they, Goldilocks. So regal names it was."

Doyle sniggered, "Ah well, could be worse. Y'could have ended up being called Rudolf or Cherubim."

Like Rassendyll. Can see that, actually. Be quite an AU, no?

I need a swashbuckling icon. And yes - that would be interesting... although - a crossover fanfic of a re-telling of a classic story... Hmmn! *vbg*

PS - who would Doyle be? Oh, Detchard, of course! Now that would be quite interesting - they meet! *g*

Oh yes, your sad Pros fic! I've been curious actually - there are two Ghost and Doyle Pros fics in the fandom already, did they inspire you to write your own, or is it just that the story's so good (I love it myself - I grew up with the tv series of The Ghost and Mrs Muir) you were inspired? *g*

And sorry - my mind went straight to KJ Charles Henchmen of Zenda when you typed Rassendyll!

I'm behind on Charles, will have to look that one up!

Well, I didn't know about the other two G&MrDs. Wasn't it you who told me about the one zine? I'm curious but I want to finish this before I read anyone else's take on it.

How did I reinvent this particular wheel? I can"t remember. I've been working through various tropes, and I guess it was turn for an AU. Apparently there are no other Leslie Ghost novel fandom works on AO3 since I made the only tag. Bodie makes a lovely Captain, though. Wish I was enough of an artist to do the portrait.

Funny, it was published the year Shaw was born.

No, if you've not already read them then I wouldn't until I'd finished writing either!

There is soooo much Pros fanfic that's not on A03 that it's ridiculous. Well - more than thirty years worth of people writing the stuff, and Pros used to be a much bigger fandom! *g* Honestly, the Pros fic on A03 is a drop in the ocean!

There's The Ghost and Mr Doyle by Gena Fisher, in the "Remember This: Pros Movie Night" zine, and there's The Ghost and Raymond Doyle by Barbara Thomas, in the Unprofessional Conduct 5 zine. I think they're both on the ProsLib CD (which is worth getting if you don't have it yet). I wish I had my palelyloitering website up and running again, I'd send you links!

It's a knack. Lately I get half way into a sentence about an author and lose the name! Age. Not my favorite thing. Still, better than NOT aging, I keep telling myself.
From: [identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
You're very welcome! *g*

To be fair, I did run a Pros website that was all about Pros zines (and stories in general), and I own hundreds of the things (ooh, I'm about to be able to unpack them from my storage on Saturday - how exciting!). And I do lots of Pros re-reading... *g* But I must admit that in this case I went and checked the local version of my palelyloitering website..! *vbg*

*psst* I think it's done. The last chapter is short and kind of madly romantic, so I'll let it age till I'm off work and get somewhere with Wifi.

It could be worse, various traditions name them as: Balthasar, Melchior and Gaspar - with one often being depicted as black, as opposed to the otherwise traditional European take on the nativity being attended by light skinned folk. I have no idea how the tradition of a black King arose. I'm sure other more learned folk can shed some light...

Personally, I would pay good money to watch the ep where Doyle calls Bodie 'Rodolph' for the duration!

There always was a black African King in the Xmas Catholic tradition and, if I remember well, another one is Asian. At least, so were the figures I saw as a child at home as in churches (where the Nativity scenes were very ancient).

I sometimes wonder if it comes from the Moorish occupation.

The Nativity scene was invented by Francisco of Assisi in the Middle-Ages; he himself travelled in Palestine. The existence of black people was already well known in Europe. Besides, the first nation to adopt Christianity was Ethiopia. There are very ancient legends about letters exchanged between an Ethiopian king and Jesus himself. Very probably not historical but meaning that Ethiopia was deemed very important by the first Church.

I was aware that sub-Saharan Africa was known to Rome. There is evidence for 'African' Romans in the UK. And I knew about early Christianity in Ethiopia - but I hadn't heard of the legends of the Ethiopian King and his correspondence with Jesus.

That's fascinating - and may well have given rise to the legend of a black King at the nativity. Ethiopia was a rich, learned and powerful country at one time. It still has an archive of medieval manuscripts.

There is a 'black' history under every stone in Europe - I remember my friends at school being angry at being whitewashed from what we were being taught. If you believe the history I was peddled, the only people who did anything useful for thousands of years were white, male and rich.

I gave up history.

Yes, those are the names I have always heard. Except I thought the last was Casper, which is a better name than Balthasar and Melchior.

cute drabble.

It is a cute drabble :0)

Yes, I think Caspar is widely used, particularly Europe. If I remember, it's the one we used in school. Although I could never work out who brought what. (I'm no biblical expert, I just had an entertaining RE teacher.)

I've not heard a legend which allocates the gifts to a particular King - and they're not always Kings either.

Despite singing 'We three Kings', they were always 'Wise Men' to us.

Personally, I've always had a soft spot for the donkey...

Of course, they were never named in any book of the New Testament; it's just a medieval legend, but widespread and very popular. They were supposed to be three because of the three presents they brought: Gold, Incense and Myrrh. Moreover, they were associated with the three human races that were known then (in spite of the fact that Magi were only Persian), so to symbolise the universal welcome of the God-Child by all mankind.

I am entranced by the comments on the Wise Men/Kings, and a little bit glad that I am commenting later here, because I would have possibly joined in (the Anglican/Catholic/Calvinist/Orthodox traditions etc, plus the Dechard/KJ Charles/Zenda rabbit hole).

Letting all that be, I totally enjoyed your drabble.
