Culture Clash

Bodie frowned at the extradition papers, neatly filed behind a transparent plastic cover. “Terrorists get vacations now? Who’s this Lieutenant Castillo?”

Doyle’s eyes were closed and his head was on the back of his chair. “That would be Lieutenant Castillo. He’s American.”

“Lewd-tenant?” Bodie propped his hip on Cowley’s desk and grinned.

One green eye cracked open. “Loo-tenant.”

“S’pose it depends on where he’s got his office,” began Bodie.

“And what he does in it,” finished Doyle, resignedly.

Bodie sniggered. “We should volunteer for escort. Give those coppers some Miami adVice.”

Doyle was proud of himself. He didn’t murder Bodie.

Note: Brits (and Canadians) pronounce "lieutenant" as if it were spelled "lef-tenant".

I can just see Castillo sitting there, expressionless, as these two snigger at each other. Good God, but they'd be obnoxious! Doyle's got authority issues, and Bodie's got copper issues, and both of them would be prickly about having to hand their arrest over to the Americans.

Hm... might actually have to write that fic someday. ;-)

Nah, he's actually from Miami Vice. He was Crockett and Tubbs' craggy-faced, silent, morose Lieutenant. And he's my favorite character on that show. :-)

I'm definitely considering it, but I don't know if that'll be my *next* project.

Eh, I didn't learn to say Lef-tenant until I joined the Army Reserve. They taught me pretty fast!

But Bodie was asking for it, right? ;-) Anyway, Doyle didn't do it because he knew he'd never be able to live with the guilt after. Even if no one would have blamed him after that bad a pun.

Fun play on the lieutenant thing. (It's taken years, and lots of British TV, for this Canadian to brainwash herself back into the proper pronunciation of the word. *g*)

I know too many people who work for National Defence. They all say "lef-tenant", and if you slip up and say "loo-tenant" around them they'll immediately launch into Forrest Gump imitations. "Looo-ten-ant Daaan!"

Sigh. It breaks a person of the habit pretty darn fast.
