I know he thinks I let him down, but I'll talk to him.
I'll explain. I’ll make him see I was just following Cowley's orders.

Could hardly have gone on the bloody run with him, could I?
He thinks I don’t care. If only he knew!
Doesn’t realise what it was like for me, does he, having to watch him go all secretive over Miss bloody Germany.
Maybe it's time I told him the truth.

with the could I almost hanging in the air and ever so slightly conveying the possibility that 'yes' he *would* have gone on the run with Bodie - if he had to - in fact he would have done *anything* for him - if he had to.
