Thank you to moth2fic for the prompts! I grabbed "journey" for this one and made it a title.

And I should say, I feel all naked and shocking, what with drabbling un-beta'd.



Journey

Partners. Stupid idea. Bodie eyes the skinny sod they’ve given him and figures he’ll put him in his place, fast.

Damn. Quick, isn’t he? But Bodie’s got him now. Snapped his head right back.

The bugger’s not going down. Enough! Finish this now, show Cowley he doesn’t need a partner... Oh sod it all!

Bodie only knows one way out of a choke hold, and he's not above breaking rules when he wants to win.

He taps out instead. The curly-haired copper is laughing, but Bodie doesn’t mind. His new partner wouldn’t be much use to him with broken fingers.

Yah, I think Bodie will have his arse handed to him a few times. But Doyle will also learn that it goes both ways. Bodie isn't slow or stupid. He's faster than he looks and he'll win a few of the matches himself.

I like to think they'll both learn to respect the other, over time. :-)

Guess they will break even in the end. And I never said Bodie was slow or stupid - just a bit too sure of himself sometimes. But so is Doyle. Over time... hmmmm... *sees another bunny hopping in* As you said - you still have a whole day ahead of you *VEG*

Oh, I didn't mean *you* thought that about Bodie! I was thinking how Doyle might take him on first impression. Big guys aren't usually the best fighters - they're often not as fast and they get too used to relying on their size and weight advantage.

I love that Bodie taps, when he could have played dirty and got out of it. Very meaningful that, although Doyle doesn't realise of course! Great title too, thank you!

Yeah - and the scary thing is that he'd most likely get away with fighting dirty in Macklin's class, too. I'll bet that when word gets back to Cowley that there are no hospitalizations that day for either member of that team, he'll recognize the significance as well.

Only trouble was, I didn't get exactly what you meant by "taps out"! Is it a code to end the fight or summat?! (*is fick*)

You 'tap out' when you've lost a fight. Just hit the ground a few times with the palm of your hand and your opponent (should) accept it as a signal you've surrendered. If they don't, the ref steps in and hauls him off.

I'm pretty sure it's a fairly universal signal in the fighting arts. (I hope!)



But yeah, I'm having fun with this addiction!

I've got a soft spot for hand to hand fighting, and this plays right into it. Silly Bodie, underestimating Doyle. But so glad he didn't resort to finger breaking. *g*

Yeah - me, too! Finger breaking is just so... very, very wrong. :-)

I love hand to hand, too. Especially when you get to match up different styles and pit grapplers against kickboxers and so forth, but I'll watch anything. Even Olympic Judo. ;-)

That last line says it all. The fact that Bodie taps out - to someone who only shortly before he had been dismissing as a lightweight - because he now knows this is "his new partner" is absolutely brilliant. Thank you!

You're welcome! :-) I would imagine a guy like Bodie would be well versed in using people's fighting styles to assess all sorts of things about them. He'd have sussed out very quickly that Doyle is smart and adaptable and honorable - great partner material.

Oh a lovely little look into the beginning of something great. I could picture the whole thing, but that last line with Doyle laughing down at him - and in my imagination Bodie's face slowly breaking into a smile - was perfect.
