I know it's a bit early in the day (well, unless you're in Australia of course...), but the morning star is shining through my window and making me feel quite Christmas-y and all frosty-winter's-morning-y, so I'm going to post now. Massive thank yous to superfast editors
shooting2kill and
jojosimco! Happy 12th of December! (Oh, and I did get roast goose in, although blink and you might miss it! *g*)

Date: 2007-12-12 02:37 pm (UTC)And I think you're one of the few writers who actually gets Doyle *right* - you write him as he is, or at least as I see him: part-idealist/philosopher, part-gypsy, part-sex bomb, part-all kinds of things, but not the whimpy, selfish sort of character which you sometimes read about:
Doyle looking as hard as any of them, caught up in it all, wild and beautifully, finally free
yup, that's my Doyle!
Thanks so much for sharing your work.

Date: 2007-12-13 02:19 pm (UTC)Really really enjoyed it. The Mari Lwyd was suitably creepy - especially for someone who still has nightmares about the Devil Rides Out. And the lads were gorgeous as always. Great atmosphere, beautiful language. And good taste on the ghost's front, getting rid of the ladies so the boys could have a good time. Nice one, that ghost. :-D And nice one you for simultaneously scaring me and warming me cockles... or something.

Date: 2007-12-14 09:32 am (UTC)Ah, I love this, it sums up the whole story in all its wonderful detail and subtle changes. A Christmas Ghost story with laughs and sex too ... fantastic, ticks all the boxes and so beautifully written too. Must say I was happy to wave the gals goodbye .. I liked that you used Frankie from that famous phone call though. Hee! The complete *inevitability* of them being together really carried the story along but the picture of the house and the food and the chess moves as the four of them manoevred (oh crap I hate trying to spell that word *g*) around each other were fascinating too. And the Welshness ... excellent!

Date: 2007-12-14 11:24 pm (UTC)Yes! Absolutely it's a true "legend", the Mari Lwyd is a Welsh tradition, which died away for a long time after it allegedly got "out of hand" - you'll find information if you google. I remembered it from featuring in one of my favourite book series, Susan Cooper's "Dark Is Rising" (I've not seen it yet, but I don't trust this movie that's been made of it...), so I looked it up again and it's ever so interesting. Various similarities to mumming in Kent, and the legend of Rhiannon, and... well, I shall leave you to google's tender mercies!
And thank you! *g*
